The Bible calls it an "inheritance." An inheritance is something we don't earn - someone else did. It's not something gained by OUR work, OUR efforts, OUR contributions, OUR obedience, OUR perfection, OUR anything. It is (as the Bible specifically states) a FREE GIFT. Left to us because of the love of the one GIVING it. The one who earned it, the one who gave it as a free gift.

Yes, Jesus died. He earned it (by HIS obedience, not by ours).... He loves us..... He gives it as an "inheritance" as a "free gift." It's really rather insulting to scream to Jesus and the world, "I earned this..... it's because of what I achieved."

Jesus died and rose again. We could never earn our way and still never can do to our sinning and falling short. But Jesus paved the way despite that.

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefined, beyond the reach of change and decay. And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see.
So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

and again

So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.

and stlil more

Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory.
You were cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth, so now you must show sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters. Love each other deeply with all your heart.

yes we are justified by faith .. and saved ,But we are saved to then Go on and not be as the old creature ,,that old man of flesh was the one he speaks of when he says "none are righteous not one all have gone astray" etc ... but those that have been buried with Christ through the waters of baptism have died and have risen again too a new life in Christs Resurrection .. ,a life where we are now free to be obedient ... as we see , from Peters words above,e we are now to live our lives Holy ,separated from the worldly sinful things. we must ever be renewing our minds to align out thinking with Gods truth to agree with it and NOT be conformed to submit our bodies as living sacrifices unto the works of righteousness - if we continue as we were before we were justified by faith, we sin anew and will reap the fruit if sin which is death.
we are not saved to remain in sin.. But to through the cross to go on from the cross and into the glory of God, being transformed ever more into his image until the day of his coming .
and as the writer says to the Hebrews ,..i will have no delight in them that draw back.. and that means one who does not go forward in faith .

The sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ upon the cross is central to the gospel message about salvation. God became a man, lived an obedient life in communion with God, was persecuted, beaten and flogged, mocked and mistreated, crucified, dead, buried, and rose again. He ascended into heaven and promised that he would return at the end of the ages to judge the living and the dead. All of this was done for the salvation of the faithful and for the release of the creation from the curse pronounced on it by God. But none of this tells us WHEN sins are forgiven. Are they forgiven when they are repented of? Are the forgiven at the last judgement? Are they forgiven before one is born (2000 years ago as some have asserted)? Must one believe to receive forgiveness? Must one repent to receive it? Is there both an objective cause and source for forgiveness and a subjective effecting of forgiveness?

I think the comments about 2 Corinthians 5:19 in your post may "prove" more than anybody would want; specifically, is it true that the whole world of humanity is reconciled to God in the sacrifice of Christ? Is it true that all the sins of all people are forgiven already?

We can say that our sins were forgiven at the cross because if they weren't forgiven there first, then they weren't atoned for ...you know the ones you commit now and will commit in the future. All sins were nailed to the cross. Every single one. That's where our Justification lies; in Christ's death. Anything else is connected to that. Everything for the Christian is connected to Christ's death and resurrection.

People can say that but what matters is what do the holy scriptures say.

because if they weren't forgiven there first, then they weren't atoned for

What you say is according to your denomination's theology but that is not what is in question here. What is in question is what do the holy scriptures teach about the forgiveness of sins.

...you know the ones you commit now and will commit in the future. All sins were nailed to the cross. Every single one.

That's been said before in this thread but where's the holy scripture to back it up?

That's where our Justification lies

What kind of justification? It appears that your post is asserting a definition of justification that excludes actual righteousness and relies only on a "declaration that one is righteous" when in fact one is not righteous in word, thought, and deed.

; in Christ's death. Anything else is connected to that. Everything for the Christian is connected to Christ's death and resurrection.

The death of the Lord Jesus Christ on a cross is central to Christian faith as is the nativity and incarnation and the resurrection and ascension and promised return.

If we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins. This is not some NEW forgiveness. This is the forgiveness that comes from the cross. From when Jesus died. The sins of the world were atoned for there and God is at work in trying to bring us to faith in Him so we have eternal life.

Really, where exactly does the scripture say "This is not some NEW forgiveness. This is the forgiveness that comes from the cross.?

God will never take away sins that one does not want to give up. So while the offer is there, the sinner has to repent, accept Yeshua's offer, and live according to His Will. If the sinner wants to mouth the sinner's prayer every sunday, he is free to do so, but the Lamb of God will never take away those cherished sins.

You're confusing the work of Christ in taking away the sins of the world with forgiveness. But I am beginning to see the pattern, the obscuring of scriptural teaching with denominational doctrine.

If they are taken away, they sure are atoned for, redeemed, forgiven.

Jesus died for those sins and they are forgiven but at death, those who reject that forgiveness won't benefit from them because they don't want forgiveness of choose to do their own works.

Are the sins of the world taken away? Who is included in "the world"?

Colossians 2:13When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, 14having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.…

When the books are opened and judgment begins, by what measures will God use, if all sins are forgiven?

What do you think that verse is teaching about when sins are forgiven?
