If they were forgiven 2,000 years ago then why ask now for forgiveness?

That's God working within someone. If you don't think they were forgiven over 2,000 years ago, does Jesus go back to the cross to die? NO.

If that forgiveness isn't from the cross then where did it come from? When asked which of your sins weren't forgiven at the cross you answered none.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

That forgiveness is still from Jesus death on the cross.

God works in "someone" to make them say "forgive me Lord for I have sinned" when in fact their sins were forgiven (presumably by God) two thousand years before they ask? If they do not ask are they still forgiven two thousand years ago despite not asking and not repenting?

When you confess and repent then isn't the forgiveness given from Jesus death on the cross or is this something not in the bible? Please share.

Forgiveness of sins is connected to baptism, to faith & repentance, and to prayer.
Therefore, you shall pray in this way:
Our Father, who is in heaven:
May your name be kept holy.
May your kingdom come.
May your will be done, as in heaven, so also on earth.
Give us this day our life-sustaining bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.

(Matthew 6:9-12)

For if you will forgive men their sins, your heavenly Father also will forgive you your offences. But if you will not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive you your sins. (Matthew 6:14-15)

Weren't those forgiven at the cross or not? Which sins did Jesus exclude from the cross because scripture tells he died for all our sins.

I see what you say but I asked what does holy scripture say about forgiveness. It's one thing to declare your doctrine and another to show it in holy scripture, right? Show it in holy scripture. It is not as if anybody has said that the cross of Christ is not relevant to forgiveness of sins. The question that is being debated (and it may not be a question answered in the holy scriptures so maybe it is better to treat it as a mystery of the faith) when does forgiveness happen?

If people agree that forgiveness happens because of Christ's work there, then that is the focal point. That's the important issue from Genesis til now, that a SAVIOR would die for our sins. Therein lies our forgiveness.

So many people have a problem with this because they think automatically that it means that everyone benefits, yet we know that not to be true. We benefit when we receive faith (by grace through faith for salvation because of God's Word). The Gospel is foolishness to the non-believer and God is at work bringing people to faith in order to believe for salvation. Not just believe there is a God. But a Savior who forgives.

Verses
Jesus has redeemed all people. John the Baptist declared, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29) This statement, which we sing in the “Agnus Dei,” declares Jesus to be “objective justification personified.” 1 Paul also wrote to Timothy, that Jesus “gave himself as a ransom for all men” (1 Timothy 2:6).

2 Corinthians 5:19: God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. “The only possible antecedent of ‘their’ in that sentence is ‘the world,’ and the world certainly includes all men.”

Romans 4:25: He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. “To refer to the words: Who was raised again for our justification,” to the so-called subjective justification, which takes place by faith, not only weakens the force of the words, but also violates the context.”3

Romans 3:22-24: There is no difference, for, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. The key word here is “all.” All have sinned and all those sinners are justified- there is no difference. “All have sinned. The verb ‘justified’ has the same subject, ‘all.”

Romans 5:18: Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men. “By raising [Christ] from the dead, [God] absolved Him from our sins which had been imputed to Him, and therefore He also absolved us in Him, that Christ’s resurrection might thus be the case and the proof and the completion of our justification.”

The sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ upon the cross is central to the gospel message about salvation. God became a man, lived an obedient life in communion with God, was persecuted, beaten and flogged, mocked and mistreated, crucified, dead, buried, and rose again. He ascended into heaven and promised that he would return at the end of the ages to judge the living and the dead. All of this was done for the salvation of the faithful and for the release of the creation from the curse pronounced on it by God. But none of this tells us WHEN sins are forgiven. Are they forgiven when they are repented of? Are the forgiven at the last judgement? Are they forgiven before one is born (2000 years ago as some have asserted)? Must one believe to receive forgiveness? Must one repent to receive it? Is there both an objective cause and source for forgiveness and a subjective effecting of forgiveness?

I think the comments about 2 Corinthians 5:19 in your post may "prove" more than anybody would want; specifically, is it true that the whole world of humanity is reconciled to God in the sacrifice of Christ? Is it true that all the sins of all people are forgiven already?

So many people have a problem with this because they think automatically that it means that everyone benefits, yet we know that not to be true. We benefit when we receive faith (by grace through faith for salvation because of God's Word). The Gospel is foolishness to the non-believer and God is at work bringing people to faith in order to believe for salvation. Not just believe there is a God. But a Savior who forgives.

Exactly and to say otherwise is wrong as well as dangerous doctrine

If your father set up an inheritance before your birth do you consider it yours because I know you consider it yours when you got to start pulling money from the account but wasn't it yours all along even if you didn't know?

No it is not yours until your father dies and the will come into effect.
