The Pillars of the Earth (2010 TV series).

I read the book over 20 years ago and it made a lasting impression on me. The movie/tv series adaption was impressive, it did not disappoint as so many book to film adaptions do. As it's been so long since I've read the book, my memory of it is not fresh, however whatever differences there may be I still found myself captivated by the story, reminded of things I forgot, and was compelled by the characters, which were acted well and compelled me to watch the entire series to the end.

Much like "the Shining", the story is a pretense, or an instrument to present certain truths by allegory, through pictorial and thematic representations. The simple viewer would say it is simply about sex and jealousy, which would be the viewpoint of the general public, unaware of certain deeper truths about the world we live in, that are referenced in the film, directly and indirectly.

It is a creepy movie that will not uplift or comfort, but may give the pondering viewer something to think about.

Ole stan was a mere puppet for promoting locations as an advertising agent.
The dark macabre is a moot aspect.

I like scotch.

I tried watching that movie before but couldn't get into it...it seemed to drag on and on.

The movie itself isn't all that captivating. It's creepy, overall, with a smutty orgy scene (filmed for an R audience). My first impression of the film was that of a slight revulsion mingled with foreboding. I think that is intended. If Kubrick hadn't directed and co-written it, and had I not already been aware of hidden in plain site themes worked into "the shining", I dare say it wouldn't be worth a mention.

In entertainment, and more especially in American politics and entertainment, or even in the Christian realm, there are things that are very rarely mentioned. Stanley mentions them, but he does it in a way where it seems they are trivialities or side shows in an otherwise straightforward story. That's his MO in films.

The Visit (2015)

Horror/scare film but not gory. I didn't think I would enjoy this much but I was surprised. Don't read up on it or watch a preview because that could ruin it.

Well scripted and acted. The characters are believable and the story plausible. Having seen the film already I'm watching a second time and can still feel the tension of the situation and a certain empathy for the main characters.

I watched a film called "Another Earth" which had a great story line although one might judge it to be slow if they sit in on it half way through.

Spoiler Alert.

Basically this teenager was drunking drunk and the radio mentioned a new blue star to make wish on, as she is driving and gazing at this new star she strikes a families vehicle head on as they were stopped at a red light.
The pregnant mother and a little boy die, the father goes into a comma.
After her prison time she is released and full of great guilt and sorrow, very quiet and introverted.
The star turns out to be an exact copy of planet Earth and by this time it had moved much closer, there is an essay contest to travel to this new planet after contact was made to it, she desires to go to the planet and start over and writes an essay.
She finds out too that the man whos family she had murdered, did not die, so she visits his home in efforts to apologize.. he's a complete mess, his house is full of garbage, he was once a successful music composer.. anyway she hesitates to apologize and offers him a free trial to clean his home to promote a cleaning service.
She cleans for him everyday, never cashes her checks from him because she doesnt want his money.
They start getting close and he starts having feelings for her...

..will she ever tell him? Does she go to Earth 2?

This isn't one movie...it's series which is somewhere in the area of 74 hours long spanning 8 series. The stories are well scripted, very well acted, and woven against a larger plot that runs throughout. The fantasy element (the dragons and undead) are major themes but proportionately smaller than the greater whole of character development and accompanying drama...leaving characters one cares about against a backdrop of breathtaking fantasy when it does emerge.

I watched for hours and hours on end, going through episode after episode. The conclusion of all of this was a bit of an anti-climax, but overall it was worth it, as the journey to get there was satisfying in itself. Highly recommended.

Just wanted to plug this again. Imo, this is more epic than LOTR, and I love LOTR. It's not that there's anything necessarily *better* about it, it's just that the series is roughly 10 hours per season, and it's 8 seasons long. When you have well crafted characters and stories for this many hours it's easy to get immersed and care about it. The fantasy part is almost secondary, and that as well was very well done. I've watched this through 3 times now.

Movie I'm currently watching: Frozen (2010) - about 3 skiers who get stranded on a chair lift after hours. Frozen (2010) - IMDb

I suggest this movie because even though this is the second time I've watched it, it's scaring me again. It's scripted well, the characters are believable and likeable and easy to empathize with. The story is plausible - it's easy to imagine this could actually happen.

Little Shop of Horrors. Steve Martin and Bill Murray about killed me in the dentist scene. I was laughing so hard I could not breathe. I actually got scared, paralyzed with laughter.

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty (2013)

It's an interesting movie loosely based on a short story by James Thurber. It's about a man who constantly tries to escape his average and unfulfilling life by daydreaming. His everyday life is constantly peppered with daydreams about adventure, heroism and love. It's also one of Ben Stiller's most underrated movies. He does a great job portraying Walter Mitty.

A wholesome animated movie that could prove entertaining for the whole family. A charming protagonist, magical creatures and a rather whimsical story. An 18-year-old girl named Sam follows a talking cat (Bob) to the realm of good and bad luck to get a lucky penny for her best friend from the orphanage where she grew up. When things get out of control and the balance between good and bad luck is destroyed, it's up to Sam, Bob and their friends to restore order and save the world.

Lately I saw the cat from outer space. I wanted to see that in the cinema when I was 8, but my friend's mom thought it was too dangerous to watch and now I just rented it and saw it. Awesome 70s special effects. And I saw that darn cat. Not a movie, but hilarious, Foil Arms and Hog on youtube.
