Tell me what you think about this if you will: A friend of mine told me he stole a lighter from me and as it happened he didn't return it to me. I asked him about stealing my lighter and he said he has a habit of picking up lighters and pens and walking off with them. I told him that he did not return it to me. I told him that this time is okay but
if he ever takes anything from me again I will have nothing to do with him. I did not yell at him or go nuts. The lighter didn't mean much to me but it was the stealing principle that bothered me. He got up and left and took the alcoholic drink he had brought for me and took it with him as he left. What do you think?

People absentmindedly walk off with the lighters (and other accoutrement) without being aware of it at the time. I don't see this act as stealing, but more as carelessness. Now, if the person later realizes that they have an item belonging to someone else, of course they should return it with an apology at the first opportunity.

Now, when you told your friend that he had taken your lighter, he should have apologized and promised to return it the next time he sees you. I think if he had done this, you would not have felt compelled to give him the warning.

Whether or not he felt accused and wanted to leave is one thing, but the fact that he took back the drink he had brought for you was a very small act, IMHO. With rare exceptions, if you give something to someone, you should not take it back, no matter what transpires in the meantime.

Thanks Mark. I thought that was pretty silly of him to take back the drink.
