Another gentle (ish) 4-mile run with another mile or so of walking afterwards. My suggested workout was "recovery" but I struggle to run as slowly as that so I just ease off if my pulse goes up. I'm still finding I gravitate to a pace my watch clocks as "tempo" rather than "base" but I can live with that for now. 9,100 steps so far, just a few to tick off before the end of the day.

Yesterday I planned a 4-mile gentle run, which typically means running fairly gently and taking a walk break if my pulse goes over a certain level. But after half a mile I caught up with one of the older guys from a local running club I know, so chatted with him as we ran. His pace is slower than mine (he's about my dad's age, so I don't expect him to be fast!) which helped me keep my pace down. After a couple of miles with him he said he didn't want to hold me up as he needed to slow down a bit, so we went at our respective speeds. Because I'd been running continuously rather than taking walk breaks I just kept going, although without a running partner I naturally gravitated to a slightly higher speed. And because I hadn't taken walk breaks my stride length was longer, so I wouldn't have made it to 10,000 steps within the distance of my regular loop.

So I rerouted and ended up running slightly over 6 miles, at an average pace faster than I planned to run 4 miles. But it felt good, I enjoyed the run.

A shorter run today, I covered five miles because I knew I had some other stuff to do that would chalk up the rest of the steps I needed. Usually I run four miles and walk the last mile and a bit, to get the extra steps. When I have enough stuff to do that I can be confident of filling the gap I either run the full route, or sometimes extend a little to make it a 10k.

I wasn't sure if I'd get my run finished, I was just about to set off and it started to rain but it didn't last long so I went out. The forecast was for rain in the afternoon. I got about a mile from home and it started to rain so I thought about rerouting but when I got to the point that I could reroute it had stopped raining. So I ran the rest of the route and shortly before I hit the five mile mark it started to gently rain again, but mostly held off until I got home.

I had a challenge to run a 10k this weekend and today was the day with the best weather to go for it. I wasn't sure how I'd do, just lately it seems the hills have really been wearing me down, I didn't sleep well last night and really expected to struggle with it. But I started out feeling fairly strong even if it was cold, so decided to just keep going and not take any walk breaks unless I really needed to.

A couple of the hills were kinda hard and I slowed down once I reached the top but didn't take any breaks and didn't even look at my tracker for the first three miles. Then it warbled when I didn't expect it to so I checked it, and found it was a heart rate warning, I'd gone higher than I usually do. I didn't feel in any distress so just kept going. It warbled a few more times, but I ignored it because I wasn't feeling anything was out of whack.

The first time I checked my time was when it warbled at the 6-mile mark, and I found I wasn't far from personal best territory. It was too late to ramp the pace to try and squeeze under my PB but I had no idea I'd been covering the ground as fast as I had been. It felt good to take a faster run, it felt good to just keep going without walk breaks. It messed up some of my metrics - my tracker bumps up my estimated fitness more if I take walk breaks - but I prefer to just run and not be beeped at all the time.

So today's run was a 10k that wasn't a record breaking attempt but ended up barely a minute slower than my personal best anyway.

It was warmer today so I decided to tick off my monthly 15k run challenge. And it felt like a challenge, it took a while for my system to feel like it warmed up and after about 7 miles I felt like I was flagging even though I wasn't going particularly fast. But I got to about 9.4 miles and then stopped (15k is slightly over 9.3 miles, and I wanted to make sure I didn't finish and save my run only to find I'd run 14,998m and it didn't count)

Now I feel more tired than I should, even having done my run.

We had some really nice warm days so I went to the park and then last night we met up with our daughter to go to a gardens attraction and I got 13,000 steps in.

With the winter weather, I haven't gotten outside to do my hikes but I've been running up and down our stairs doing chores and trying to get my heart rate up that way.

I've wanted to run the last few days but it's been brutally cold and windy, so I've worn some extra layers and walked instead.

Even when walking the wind hurts my face too much. I need to get back to my indoor walking videos I used to do. They're here in this thread, so I don't have to hunt too much :)

Icy wind in the face isn't a lot of fun, I've come home a few times with ice crystals in my beard. But I don't want to get out of the habit of walking so I'll go out in it regardless. The last couple of days I've worn long pants because the wind has whipped ice crystals and cinders from the road into my legs, which really isn't fun in shorts.

I ended up doing one of my walking videos and I could really feel it in a good way. It's nice sometimes to work other areas that the body isn't used to.

I got a run in today. It was supposed to be cold so I was planning a walk. My next door neighbor said I could have some of a tree branch that fell on his property, so I went to cut and collect that, and figured it wasn't as cold as I expected. So I went for a run instead. I walked the last mile as a cooldown, and during that mile figured just how cold it was. I was glad to get home.

I saw that it's supposed to get warmer this week for a couple of days! Plan now for a great run!

Last month my watch's software had a challenge to run a 15k. The challenge was finding a day that would be warm enough and dry enough to make it something other than an exercise in mind over matter. This month I don't have that challenge, but I have a 10k challenge that's only valid next weekend. Hopefully it will be warm(ish) and dry.

I finally remembered to get a new pair of running shoes. The old pair has just shy of 500 miles on them and I can feel the difference.

I wanted a direct replacement but the store didn't have them in my size. I could have ordered them but decided to pay a little extra for a slightly higher range shoe. I took them out for their maiden run and the springiness in the soles feels like the shoes are trying to endlessly push me forward. Even taking a small number of walk breaks I came within just under a minute of my personal best over 10k.

Woo Hoo!! New shoes can make a difference.

Last year I bought a pair of Keen hiking shoes and paid the most money I've ever paid for a shoe and it's feeling really hard on my feet and is cracking at the tops, which means that it's not as waterproof as it should be. It's only a year old and I'm disappointed in that brand. The brand I used to buy was a Cabela's name brand that lasted at least 2-3 years and they don't make it anymore for women.

I have a pair of Keen hiking shoes. In the shop they were the most comfortable of all the pairs I tried but out on the trails they aren't as comfortable as my last pair. The tops seem to gape as I walk, so by the time I get home I've got loads of bits of leaf and grass and stuff in there. I end up hoping I don't end up with a tick tucked in my boots or something.

I did a gentle run yesterday and spent much of it wishing I hadn't bothered. I knew it would be a gentle with a walk on the end so wore my old running shoes. Running into a sustained 30mph wind wasn't a lot of fun, a part of my route features a long gentle uphill stretch, and adding a relentless headwind made me wish I'd stayed home.

I have a challenge to run a 5k this weekend. The temperatures aren't supposed to go over the mid 20s today, with strong winds, but tomorrow is worse and Sunday is worse still. So I guess I'll be doing another gentle run, wrapped in lots of layers and keeping my effort way down so I don't end up a sweaty mess under all the layers.
