Is anointing symbolic only?

The anointing cannot be explained with human words. It is tangible, palpable, when the power of the Holy Spirit drops afresh upon the believer.

Tis when the disciples felt their hearts burn within them at Jesus revealing of the old testament that's felt when the human spirit agrees with the Holy Spirit bringing in a hearing of the word from which new birth can occur. Someone who is not anointed in the power of the Spirit cannot produce fruit. Every Christian at some point has felt that anointing, perhaps not from a sermon per sa but from reading anointed writings also

The anointing cannot be explained with human words. It is tangible, palpable, when the power of the Holy Spirit drops afresh upon the believer.

I see, then it's a feeling. The disciples feeling mentioned isn't associated with the Holy Spirit. The passage says only "They said to each other, 'Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?'" Luk 24:32

It's not a feeling. Jesus was anointed to break the works of the devil. If you get laid hands on and the yoke breaks and it was kosher that's the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

The question that cassia answered was "Where does scripture tell me to feel somebody else's anointing?"

Yes it was a bad example but I think the rest of my post still stands. Biblically true. I was adding experience to that in a traditional type of way.

That dead guy whom they threw in the grave of Elijah or Elisha, can't remember. I bet he felt something.

Joshua felt something when he was standing in front of the Captain of the army. Be careful what you pray for.

Scripture does not say that Saul felt something. He went blind, heard a voice, and continued on his journey. Later he was baptised and he regained his sight.

He fell from his horse. If he felt nothing it'd have been a miracle. It's not about feeling/sensing. Some feel nothing, but they experience a change.

It was a miracle and I do not mean that Saul was insensate before and after the Lord appeared to him and spoke to him. What I mean is that the holy scriptures emphasise what happened not what Saul felt. He saw a blinding light, heard a voice, went blind, and so forth. These are events that happened. The account does not say "And the Lord appeared to Saul on the road to Damascus and caused him to feel the power of the Spirit and impressed on his mind words without sounds and he felt that he'd seen a vision ..." If a pastor was stopped on the road to his church building and saw a bright light, heard the voice of the Lord, was instructed what to do, and lost his sight until he did what he was instructed to do then that might be a parallel with what the Lord did when he appeared to Saul on the road to Damascus. The difference that is present between the scripture description and feeling the anointing is that the former is something that happened and is described while the anointing is described by one poster as "The anointing cannot be explained with human words. It is tangible, palpable, when the power of the Holy Spirit drops afresh upon the believer." these are very different things.

Asking what the holy scriptures say and hence what is taught in them cannot weaken the faith of any Christian who counts the holy scriptures as holy and instructive.

It is something. Some feel it, some don't. I never say anointing. I just say hey the Holy Spirit is present here very strong.

Yes, in my parish we say that the Spirit is present, working, changing hearts and minds, helping the faithful to grow and build up the body.

Yes ... Build up THE BODY, ... In truth, and love, and friendship, and encouragement.
Til we all come in to the unity of THE FAITH. Let brotherly and sisterly LOVE ... Continue. :)

Yes, some who say they are Christians never experience the presence of the Lord. But I wonder why that is so. But they argue with others about what other say they experience.

Could it be that they have known Him for such a long time that they don't perceive anything new about Him being there? :)

May be. But that does not give them the right to say what others say they perceive is hog wash.
