Is the book of Jonah ever quoted in the New Testament?

Satire doesn't usually come with warning labels. I'm afraid it's like trying to explain a joke. If you can't see it, there's likely not much I can do to help.

Is the book of Jonah ever quoted in the New Testament?

Not really. As far as I can tell, that is simply a reference to the time period. It doesn't show Jesus celebrating. And even if it did, Jews can (and do) celebrate Hanukkah without accepting Maccabees as canonical.

Is the book of Jonah ever quoted in the New Testament?

That would make sense referring to Isaiah. But Jonah is a satire, so there's almost certainly not an actual individual. It's a reference to a specific literary work. I should note that I don't follow a strict policy of requiring Jesus to quote a book before it's canonical. As far as I can tell...

Is the book of Jonah ever quoted in the New Testament?

Jonah is referred to 4 times in Matthew. The closest to a quote is Mat 12:41 "The people of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and see, something greater than Jonah is here!" That refers to Jonah's...

    Texas Governor Signs Religious Bills

These laws look like posturing more than reality. No church can be ordered to perform same sex marriage now, and the history of things like racially mixed marriage show that it's not going to happen in the future even without laws like this. The law exempting churches from health issues sounds...

    Vaccine Hesitancy

Happening at about the rate expected anyway. It’s cetainly posdible that there is something there, but it’s going to be really hard to be sure. When I looked into It I was surprised how common myocarditis is. It’s the third leading cause of death for young adults.

    2 Questions for Trinitarians

I’m going to try to avoid writing a book, but still say why I think the Trinity makes sense to someone committed to the shema. 1) Christians have generally felt the Jesus shows us God, and that God was in Christ, including in his death. That gives us a God that isn’t just the unmoved mover, but...

    2 Questions for Trinitarians

I’m not arguing what is true, but what the doctrine of the Trinity means, as generally understood. Personally I accept Nicea, but it allows more interpretations than later developments, and even those allow for several, understandings. The problem with not going beyond the shema is that if Jesus...

    2 Questions for Trinitarians

That would be a reasonable comment for an early stage in development. It describes the "economic Trinity," meaning threefold action or appearance. But things didn't stop there. The final doctrine refers to ontology, not just how God acts on us but how he is. No existing word really was...

    Phileo Love vs Agapao Love

In an appendix to his commentary on John, brown looked at this. He looked at how the words are actually used in the NT. There didn’t appear to be a consistent difference. That doesn’t deny that the conceptual difference exists, but it is a warning against reading too much into the choice of...

    God hates certain people.

I think you’re trying to treat the Bible as a set of propositions in symbolic logic rather than literature. In normal human life it is possible to hate someone that you love because of some immediate situation. I guess you could translate that as disapproval, but among humans there is often an...

    God hates certain people.

In Rom 11 we learn that God's rejection is temporary. He chose to work in different ways though different people, but in the end will accept them all. Jacob was the ancestor of Israel. So God's choice of Jacob was really the beginning of his choice of Israel. But Israel was chosen to be the...

I’ve heard it said that it’s mainly evangelical Christians who refuse to get the vaccine

The problem is that it's not that uncommon without vaccination, so it's hard to know just how many would happen anyway. It's the third leading cause of death in young adults. It's a side effect of viruses, including Covid. But it's certainly worth investigating carefully. I was surprised when I...

It’s possible in theory, but generally the results aren’t good.

    On the Bible and DIVORCE

The Word commentary notes that while there is no prohibition against marrying foreigners, there are places that forbid marrying Caananites, because of the danger of taking up Canaanite religion. The list of nationalities of wives includes things beyond Caanan. Furthermore, the wording of Ez 9:2...

Why are there some Christians who are obsessed with Flat Earth Conspiracy?

Those L Those Luther quotes might be about earth being unmoved and at the center, not flat. Though theyre not really explicit even about that. See Copernicus and the Lutherans That the stars are just like the sun, but fixed, would seem to be consistent with what was known at the time.

Why are there some Christians who are obsessed with Flat Earth Conspiracy?

The quote from Magellan is false. Ferdinand Magellan - Wikiquote. The idea that the Church generally taught a flat earth seems to be largely atheist propaganda, though surely some Christians did believe it. The original source of this quotation is disputed, as you can see from the associated...

World Could the law be changed to have atheists and agnostics barred from holding political office?

Wrath also appears in the NT. In the classic Greek usage it's something that is not appropriate for God. However it's easy to imagine God as being angry at evil. The question is how that is reflected in his attitude towards people who do evil. In this area modern sensibilities differ from...

    Was Ezra a prophet?

Ezra certainly does contradict other Scripture: Jesus' condemnation of divorce. Ezra approves mass divorce based on the nationality of the wife, with no apparent examination of whether the wife has converted, and no provision for the wife or children. I accept it as representing the views of...
