    False teachers

Not even close. What do you do when one person's spirit says something is good while another's says it is bad? It can't be both at once. If only there was some objective standard of truth we might fall back on...

    False teachers

Anyone who says we don't need to test things immediately gets put on my "false teacher" list. Bill Johnson (who I mentioned earlier) seems to have a particular dislike for Bible study. Likewise Brent Engelman used to teach (he may still do, I haven't looked at his material for some months) that...

    Speaking in tongues?

Not necessarily. Sometimes people can speak in tongues without even being aware they are doing it. I've personally been in a situation where someone spoke, I heard gibberish and the person beside me heard English.

    Speaking in tongues?

I don't speak in tongues so can't say much about it from experience. As I mentioned previously I have heard a friend speak in tongues that I don't understand but recently recognised one of the structures in it as being very much like Hebrew. From what I recall the particular sound formation...

    Windows 10?

I used Windows Vista briefly when I needed a piece of software I developed to support it and it caused me so much grief I looked forward to the day that I could stop supporting Vista. I dropped Vista support before I dropped XP support.

    Who identifies as Charismatic

When one's beliefs stray sufficiently far from core theology I would question whether everyone who claims the name of Christ is still a brother. Paul was clear that if someone brings a different gospel they are accursed (literally, "anathema"). I'm not sure that someone bringing a different...

    Who identifies as Charismatic

I'd regard myself as essentially charismatic, in that I believe the Holy Spirit still indwells Christians, the gifts of the Spirit are still active in the people to whom God chooses to give them, and God still performs miracles today. As I may have mentioned once or twice before I reject the...

What is your definition of a miracle?

Exactly, although when things are constantly presented as if miracles are available tonight to anyone who just comes forward in faith to claim it you'd struggle to draw the same conclusion from the teaching. Sometimes God does work a miracle, sometimes he does not. We don't get to know why he...

    Stopping to think ....

Which is great in theory, but the whole "we are all sinners" inevitably leads into rabbit trails about whether some sins are worse than others and whether God really considers fiddling your expense claims to cover dinner for your partner to be on a par with the rape and murder of children. The...

    Windows 10?

Not until Microscoff have had chance to shake out the teething issues. After Windoze ME, Vista and 8 I'm not interested in being an unpaid beta tester. I'll stick with Windoze 7 until it all stabilises.

Do men REALLY age better than women?

I don't think you can apply a generalisation like that either way. I can see that women are expected to look young while men aren't but that's nothing to do with who ages better. People say that wrinkles on a woman make her look old but apparently the same wrinkles on a man make him...

What is your definition of a miracle?

I think it would depend on the context. In the context of more casual speech a "miracle" is anything particularly fortuitous. For example the other day I was cycling on a sweeping bend down a steep hill and briefly went off the road onto the gravel at about 35mph. I really thought I was about...

    New forum additions!

The bit I don't understand is that if our faith is supposed to be a quest to become more and more Christ-like it rather implies that we need to know more and more what Christ is like. To my mind that means we need to know what is true, not necessarily what our preferred denomination says is...

    Views on Eastern Orthodox Iconography?

The bronze serpent that Moses made (Num 21:9) was made at God's instruction. It certainly wasn't intended to be worshipped but over time Israel called it Nehushtan and burned incense to it, which is why King Hezekiah had it broken into pieces (2Ki 18:4)

    New forum additions!

I'd want to look at his teachings and say why I think they are wrong, suitably referenced of course :) To be honest if you're going to create a lot of areas where teaching can go totally unchallenged then I'd respectfully suggest you're repeating a mistake of CF and recreating one of the...

    New forum additions!

I didn't get an answer to my question yet - as one who is broadly charismatic but utterly opposed to the likes of Bill Johnson (who is also undoubtedly in the "charismatic" camp), are the forum rules going to prohibit me speaking against what I believe to be falsehoods in his teaching?

    Stopping to think ....

So how do you explain to someone else what it is about Christians that is different, in a way that they can receive it for themselves? It's actually quite a challenging question, if we can't define what it is in terms that a non-believer can understand how is our evangelism going to offer them...

How would you counter a Muslim who uses much the same form of words to claim that the Qu'ran is alive and the Bible is corrupted?

    Speaking in tongues?

It's not simply stating a fact. Your stance appears to be little more than "my spirit bears witness to", which could be used to defend anything from speaking in tongues to chanting "Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna" on street corners to transcendental meditation to worshipping the devil. Those...

    Speaking in tongues?

The "your spirit bears witness with it" argument falls flat on so many levels. What do you do if, for example, one person says that "their spirit bears witness with it" while another finds their spirit clashes with it so violently they can't bear to be in the same room? And, just to be clear...
