I thought that it symbolised the fact that the sustinence and and physician of the faithful is Christ, and the ceremony is a remembrance of that.

I admit that I could be off the mark here and would gladly receive either edification or rebuke with further substantiation (with scriptural references preferably).

Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is my body." And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, "Drink of it, all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you I shall not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom."
(Matthew 26:26-29)

And here is an OUTSTANDING (totally revealing!) explanation of this video (complete with the "I AM" arguments from John). Okay, it's 20 minutes long and so too long for some, but it WILL give you a perspective you may not have heard....

What one receives in communion is the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ.

Okay, this is 26 minutes long and ... not simple.... but for those willing, it is at the very least, very revealing

Now this is where it gets really confusing when showing a picture of a baby saying "this is David" but it's not the flesh and blood baby. :sigh: but your saying that flesh and blood are there in the picture your showing ...

I actually did watch both of those vids. It's not something I usually do because I figger if you can't explain it from scripture then a manmade script won't help.

Folks have done a fine job explaining from scripture in this thread. And, unless what you hear every Sunday is 22-46 minutes (give or take) of rote bible from the mouth of the Pastor, what you're hearing is "man-made script". It's just script that suits you.

It doesn`t help imo to post a video then spend the next ten posts saying the answer is in the video ... oh which 20 minute time frame that I wasted was that from ... it seems a lazy way of posting what cannot explain themselves. jmo

If nothing else, a person would know, from a Lutheran POV, what communion represents and the basis for it. Agree or not, for information's sake I would think it might be worthwhile.

I did watch them as I said, but didn't find the reasons for Lutheran beliefs. What I did watch didn't make sense.

I may not have read all the thread but I didn't see scripture to support the practise over spiritual edification in the communion.

Video scripts are often full of scripture quotes and references. How is that any more (or less) man made than what somebody here on CH types?

Spiritualized (symbolically) for edification = remembering what the Lord has done.

Doesn't everybody remember the Lord's suffering and death when they receive communion? It's hard to think of any denomination (salvation army maybe excepted) that doesn't teach that Christ lived and died to save his people from their sins, right?

I see no reason to think that those who adhere to 'real presence' in communion have placed any less importance in remembering what the Lord has done, or view the process as any less spiritual or edifying.

I am not sure if it is still the case but it was the case in the past that the salvation army did not have either baptism or communion because they counted themselves a para-church organisation.

Since all who have communion already remember the Lord's saving work we can return to the Lord's words at the last supper, right?

Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is my body."
