John 4:24 is the verse you were looking for, I think.

"God is Spirit. And so, those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth." John 4:24

Jesus is flesh and bones as well as Spirit. See my hands and feet, that it is I myself. Look and touch. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have. Luke 24:39

We, meaning human beings, have flesh and bones too. Our senses are built by God to perceive matter and energy in creation. We cannot be complete while existing as pure spirit - For we know that, when our earthly house of this habitation is dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in heaven. And for this reason also, we groan, desiring to be clothed from above with our habitation from heaven. If we are so clothed, then we will not be found to be naked. Then too, we who are in this tabernacle groan under the burden, because we do not want to be stripped, but rather to be clothed from above, so that what is mortal may be absorbed by life. 2 Corinthians 5:1-4

Jesus words in John 6:22-71 are spirit and life yet real and physical.
I agree

But the abode is not an earthly place, nor is the sustinence of the spirit.

Though there is symbolism in all things it seems, we know that it is just that. Did the Spirit of GOD not come and abide in Jesus the Christ of GOD?

though the Spirit is just that, it does lead, and cause, and affect, and manifest within the material.

A literal interpretation of the bread and wine, or rather sustinence and life blood of the Spirit of GOD, is bereft of depth and null of significance. It is but words.

Anyway, really not trying to offend and admit I am still learning and could be wrong.

peace

Although supportive dogma negatively is never a good idea, nor is rejecting such.

In my experience, most that deny Real Presence do so with that negative argument: "It CAN'T be true..... Jesus is in heaven and so CAN'T be here!" It's a very fundamental denial of Chalcadon and the Two Natures of Christ. Thus, IMO, the REASON for the denial is what is very troubling, very dangerous. Those who leave it as "I simply choose to regard this as metaphor" are simply choosing to include this in their largely "not really true" theology. Such is far less disconcerting than those who proclaim their denouncing of Chalcadon and the two inseparable natures of Christ (and in the process, a promise of Jesus very dear to me, "Lo, I am with you always.")

Thank you. May all the Eucharistic blessings be yours, Philip.
