Is the anointing that those claim to receive today symbolic only?

Haven't you come across people on the net claiming to be anointed by God?

The origin of anointing was from the shepherds protecting their sheep from lice and insects getting into their heads (killing them). They would put oil on the sheep heads to make it slippery so the insects couldn't get inside the head. In biblical times people were anointed with oil to signify God's calling in their life.

Hebrews 1:9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.”

1John 2:20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.

1John 2:27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.

James 5:14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.

This is what the New Testement has to say about anointing. If someone isn't claiming they have THIS, then what it it they claim they have and what is their Biblical basis for making that claim?

I knew several Pentecostal pastors who claimed "the anointing" on various occasions but their preaching was not better on those occasions they only thought it was.

By several I mean five pastors who I knew and still know quite well.

The annointing has nothing to do with the style they preach but everything to do with the content

I didn't mention style. I referred to their preaching which is mainly a matter of content though they may have thought that presentation counted too.

I have never heard this before .. is that an ole shepards tale? Anointed was first coined in the old testament in a prayer that was said to God by Hannah the mother of Samuel. That was the first time it was mentioned in the bible and it was prophetic of the King that was to be born into a lineage not yet created in God's workings with His people. It's thru Christ and by God that we are all anointed 2 Corinthians 1:21
The anointing for us comes from the Holy Spirit to hear what the Spirit says to the churches and to respond with the Spirit to the returning of Christ. Christ feared that there would be no faith left in His return to God's family on earth.

It is easy to tell the annointing and yes not all who claim it have it and what I have seen is the annointing is upon them preaching but after it lifts, sometimes it takes a few hours if strong but it does eventually lift, I have never met anyone that the annointing stayed on. Also someone mentioned that we are all annointed and to an extenthis is true as God will annoint all of us to do something in His kingdom but not all are annointed as not all follow God closely and not all are in His will in what they are doing.

It seems to me that there is a 2[fold to anointing. The first is for our daily living that remains with us to help overcome sins in our lives and that sort of thing. The other comes upon a person to accomplish God's will and that doesn't remain. Daily living is what I see as the breath of God on our newly created hearts of flesh and the other a cloak of power from on high.

I haven't seen nor heard "anointed" preaching despite having sat through numerous sermons about which some have said "he was anointed".

Where does scripture tell me to feel somebody else's anointing?

Where does scripture tell me to feel somebody else's anointing?
Tis when the disciples felt their hearts burn within them at Jesus revealing of the old testament that's felt when the human spirit agrees with the Holy Spirit bringing in a hearing of the word from which new birth can occur. Someone who is not anointed in the power of the Spirit cannot produce fruit. Every Christian at some point has felt that anointing, perhaps not from a sermon per sa but from reading anointed writings also
