When I was a kid, it wasn't uncommon that when I had my chores done that I would be turned loose on my bicycle to roam the streets, allowed to go wherever I chose. Now, the prospect of turning a child loose with a bicycle anywhere but the back yard, with parental supervision and 40 pieces of protective gear, would be criminal parental negligence.

I loved it as a child, and would get excited when I found a street I hadn't been down before. My mom and dad would just say, "be back in time for dinner."

I think today's kids, the vast majority of them, have no idea what it feels like to collapse in the grass giddy and winded from running hard and playing hard with their friends. :(

Don't get me started on things kids don't do today... LOL They lack the imagination for play that we had! My sister, friends and I would invent new games, put on our own "shows" with song, dance and acrobatics and plenty of role playing. When I started babysitting in my teens the neighborhood kids would knock on my door to get me to come outside to help them play because I had the best ideas! LOL As a teen I didn't want to be stuck with kids all day long!

This is the thing that often gets me.

In my childhood I was given outlines of what was expected of me (e.g. I wasn't allowed to ride my bicycle on the busy main road the other side of the village), I was expected to let my parents know roughly where I was going to be (e.g. I'm going to play with Chris) and that was pretty much it. We'd walk (unattended) down to the local park and play, ride our bikes, whatever. One day my friend and I played in his neighbor's fields (the neighbor had 7 acres and was happy for us to play there as long as we didn't damage fences). Through the eyes of a 9-year-old seven acres might as well be a whole continent.

Now it seems that if you so much as look away from your child you're guilty of neglect, and then we wonder why children either go off the rails as soon as they are given some freedom, or we wonder why they can't cope with life.

The other thing about my childhood is that you didn't upset the neighbors because if they complained to your parents you'd get it in the neck. Now if people complain about someone else's kids running wild somehow they are out of line.

I had more freedoms as a child than I gave my daughter but only because the world changed drastically. Even though I didn't want her to have a cell phone at a young age I was happy when she got one so we could stay in touch when she was out.

It used to be that there were more stay at home moms when I was younger so they all looked out for us when we were outside playing. Now where I live the neighbors wave hello and that's it. We DO have a block party next weekend but I don't even know their names :(

I hear people say the world changed, and it has, but some also say that people have gotten worse, and that I disagree with. I don't think human nature has changed much at all for many millennia. I think we hear about things much more rapidly now and we are constantly inundated by horrible things done around the world, and of course with a lot more people now than say 50 years ago, the absolute number of those who would bring harm to others has increased, but I doubt the relative number has changed appreciably.

But I think you have hit the nail squarely on the head [unm]Lämmchen[/unm] when you cite mothers not being at home like they used to as a major change in people feeling good about letting their kids out in the neighborhood "unsupervised" because back when I was a kid, we weren't really unsupervised...we always had moms looking out their windows and doors making sure the kids within their line of site were okay and behaving. And we knew if we weren't behaving, the mom that could see us likely knew our own mom and would let her know what we'd been up to. And she might just come outside and give us an earful too, even if she didn't know who we belonged to.

So yes, the word has definitely changed, and I shouldn't be so quick to say the kids of today are too lazy to go play outside. Sometimes I hear what I'm saying, and I think to myself...you are becoming that old man who shakes his fist at kids and says, "back in my day, we minded our elders and we weren't lazy like you kids are today!" I don't want to be that old man...LOL!

Yet it has changed and so have the kids. There are things done today that back then we wouldnt have even thought about let alone do. Manners were much better and the language as well. Drugs were what the doctor gave us if sick

What I mean to say, is that if you could somehow take a large group of infants from 100 years ago and raise them in today's environment, you would find they behave just like all the other kids raised in the same environment. It is the environment that is to blame, not that human nature has changed and people aren't as "good" as they used to be. :D

True... my childhood wasn't all that many years ago and hearing people swear was still quite unusual back then. Nowadays it's far from rare to see people who can't put together a sentence that isn't peppered with expletives.

Potato chips...I don't eat them very often because I am big enough already but I like the many flavored ones; biscuits and gravy is a real good one imho.

My wife and I recently found some kettle chips made with salt and black pepper. They're really good. Dangerously good in fact.

She doesn't like the ones from the bottom of the pack because she says they are too peppery. Which suits me fine, because it means I get to eat them :)
