I am going to look into a humidifier. It's a nice day today so I have the heat on 66 F. I don't like to be warm when I sleep. I have the vent closed in my bedroom. Yes, older people often turn the heat up because they get cold easily. I'm glad you found the spare bedroom. I can relate to cracked lips and dry skin, too. I have to use a special formula on my face that takes the dry skin off before I use a moisturizer.

If you've closed the heating vent in your bedroom it's also worth turning the heat down a couple of degrees before you go to bed. It saves a bit of heating, keeps the place cooler while you sleep and, since you don't want to be warm when you sleep, means you pay less while getting more comfort.

It's funny the way my wife and I are wired differently where cold is concerned. We don't have a radiator in our bedroom (it's an old house). Last night I had a sheet and a single blanket over me, she had the same sheet but had piled up four blankets. I'm surprised she could move at all under that lot. So today I had the job of dismantling and fixing an electric heater for our bedroom. Another fun job that's coming is to get in the attic, rip up the floor, and replace the insulation. That's probably going to take 20 rolls of fiberglass and I don't know how much in replacement flooring material.

Another thought on the heating issue. It seems when it's cold outside people turn the heating up higher (and when it's really hot outside they turn the air conditioning cooler), but what that does is increases the thermal difference between inside and outside, which increases the "thermal shock" of going from one to the other. I figure the best thing to do is to keep the place as cool as you can while staying comfortable in the winter, and as warm as you can while staying comfortable in the summer.

As I mentioned above that keeps your bills down because the heater or a/c is doing less work, it means you don't go from a cold house to gasp-inducing heat in the summer, or cold outside to hideously warm and dry indoors in the winter, in the winter it also avoids stripping all the humidity out of the air, and does all that while saving you money.

Winter can be a problem because hot air can hold a lot more moisture than cold air, so if you heat air without adding moisture you reduce the relative humidity. Years ago I bought a device called an air washer that essentially had a load of rotating ridged disks that carried lots of tiny pockets of water from a reservoir, then as the disks rotated the water poured out and ran back into the reservoir. A fan blew down from above onto the disks. The whole thing washed dust and pollution out of the air, and because there was air blowing over moving water it also evaporated water to increase the relative humidity, but without boiling it as so many cheaper humidifiers will do. You have to refill the reservoir every day or two (more or less depending on how hot and dry it is), and every once in a while you have to clean the base to get all the accumulated dust and corruption out of it. It wasn't cheap but it was worth every penny.

Hi Tango, Messy and Bill, thanks for all the information on humidity and heat and all that. I can't turn the heat down lower than 66 because I have birds and I don't want them to get a chill. It is cool enough at 66 at night for me and my pets. Sounds like you had a good time Messy!

I am up early for a change today. I slept about 12 hours. Yet I feel okay. How are you all doing today?

If you need a cooler temperature you could always use a room heater to keep the birds warm and drop the heat a little for your benefit. Or check what temperatures the birds would be happy - if they are tropical they may struggle if it gets too cold but it's very easy to think of animals as needing something they don't need. My wife worries about the cat being cold in the kitchen at night but I remind her that the kitchen won't go below about 60 degrees and the cat is wearing a fur coat that will keep him warm in temperatures way colder than 60.

Hi tango and bill and everyone. My parakeets are from the climate of Australia. But they are only descendants of the ones from Australia. They are raised in homes and not outdoors. I had the heat at 64 for awhile because the thermostat keeps making the heat go above 70 and it feels too warm then. Then it felt too cold in here at 64. I don't like that chilled feeling so I put the heat back up a bit.

If your system will support a wireless thermostat you can mount one to an angled piece of board so you can take it to whatever room you're in at the time. You could also look into low speed ceiling fans (or other fans for that matter) to just keep the air moving very gently. Since warm air tends to rise and cool air tends to fall you don't want to find the warm air is against the ceiling while your feet freeze on a cold floor.

Thanks for that info. I have a ceiling fan but don't use it because the birds cage is open all day and they could get hurt if they flew into the fan. I have a couple of other fans, though, too.

Yes, the blades might not do a bird any good if they should meet. I'd expect a bird would avoid it but wouldn't want to take that risk.

What you want isn't a fan that blows air hard enough to be cooling, just enough to gently move it around.
