Hi Bill and MC. Happy Advent to you as well!

I sure had a quiet night tonight at home. Fell asleep and just woke up.

I dozed off in my chair as well. I don't know why, I sat down and put a movie on and the next thing I knew I snapped awake. My wife tells me I slept through 20 minutes of the movie. I wasn't even tired when I sat down but once the movie came on I struggled to keep my eyes open at all. Oh well, it's one I've seen a few times before so I knew which bits I'd missed.

Maybe the change in weather is effecting us and making us sleepy. I don't know if your weather has changed but here it has gotten a lot colder.

It's got cooler but the temperatures are still mostly in the 40s to 60s. The heating comes on more and as the air gets dry that tends to make me drowsy. The winter can be hard, I tend to dehydrate but because it's not through sweating a lot (like I do when hiking in mountains in the summer heat) it's not as noticeable until I start to get dry skin or get really irritable.

Yes, I have gas heat going on now and it dries out everything I have!! I put vaseline up my nose because my nose gets scabs inside. I know, gross, but I have to do something about it!

How about a portable humidifier for your main rooms of the house?

I agree with the others - look into a humidifier.

Another thing to do is keep the heat as low as you can while still being comfortable. That not only reduces the drying of the air but also keeps your heating bills down.

Years ago my wife and I visited her aunt during the middle of a Pennsylvania winter. She kept her house at 74 degrees and after two nights I honestly thought I was going to have to leave and stay somewhere else. I was waking multiple times a night barely able to breathe, the slightest movement of my mouth caused my lips to split, and my skin was dry and scaly. In the end I realised she had another spare bedroom with no radiator in it so I slept in there. It was brutally cold getting into bed in an unheated room in December but I soon learned to cope, at least I could sleep.

It's rare for me to turn the heating higher than about 66.

I am going to look into a humidifier. It's a nice day today so I have the heat on 66 F. I don't like to be warm when I sleep. I have the vent closed in my bedroom. Yes, older people often turn the heat up because they get cold easily. I'm glad you found the spare bedroom. I can relate to cracked lips and dry skin, too. I have to use a special formula on my face that takes the dry skin off before I use a moisturizer.
