By now, I don't doubt that you do. (sigh)

In addition, you've posted that you "take it" that...

1) I believe everyone can save himself by himself

2) that I believe Jesus didn't save anyone at all (!)

3) but also that I think some will be saved...by their Works.

🙄
Universal atonement is Pelagianism (not Christianity) Because it saves no one. As you affirm, it gives people the opportunity to save themselves by works. What other than by Free Will? = Pelagianism. A Heresy according to the early church.

Uh, no. It isn't.

I haven't affirmed that. I never have approved of Pelagianism, nor supported the idea that people can save themselves, and certainly not by their own works.

By Faith, just as the Bible teaches.
Choosing to believe as an act of the will?

It's fun to talk here, no matter who's involved, but you don't know enough about the Bible or Christianity to be posting on the subjects that you have been addressing. Sorry.

And you are posting on a "Christians Only" forum in defiance of the rules.

Universal Atonement robs God of his glory. They see themselves as good enough to save themselves. This is salvation by self-righteousness. Limited atonement on the other hand gives God full glory in salvation, the subjects being unable to do nothing but sin in all they do unless he saves them.

The World Christ died for has been saved, that was the purpose for His Death. Did He fail ? I say no Jn 3:16-17

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

See that ? This world is saved through Him. The word through here is the greek word dia :

  1. through
    1. the ground or reason by which something is or is not done
      1. by reason of
      2. on account of
      3. because of for this reason
      4. therefore
      5. on this account

So this world is saved on account of Him, His Obedience unto Death Rom 5:19

19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

So anyone who is lost, doesnt belong to the world that has been saved through Christ. They can only belong to that world which is condemned outside of Christ 1 Cor 11:32

32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

The world in Jn 3:16-17 is a different world of men in 1 Cor 11:32 !

@1689Dave

Universal Atonement does NOT hold that each is good enough. It teaches that Christ died for all. You seem to have absolutely no idea, not a clue what you are talking about.

Limited Atonement.

This view, invented by a tiny number of radical Calvinists 500 years ago, insists that Jesus did NOT die for all but rather for ONLY some, a few unknowable number. But for 500 years, they've been looking for a verse that states, "Jesus died not for all but only for some." So far, after 500 years, none of them have found that verse. We all know why.

Scripture:

Crickets.

Universal Atonement.

This view teaches that Jesus died for all. Not all are saved since not all have faith, but Jesus did die for all.

Scripture:

1 John 2:2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

Titus 2:11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Hebrews 2:9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

2 Corinthians 5:14-15 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

1 John 4:14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.

John 1:29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

1 Timothy 4:10 For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people.

2 Corinthians 5:15 And he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

2 Corinthians 5:19 That is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.

1 Timothy 2:6 Who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.

1 Timothy 2:5-6 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.

2 Corinthians 5:14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all.

"Limited Atonement" requires that these verses (and many more) are all false, wrong, lying. I don't agree with that. And of course, those like you who support limited atonement have NO ONE VERSE that states, "Jesus did NOT die for all but ONLY for some."

Factually wrong. Universal Atonement says verbatim what the verses (and many more) above state, Jesus died for all. Limited Atonement insists all those verses are all wrong, that Jesus did NOT die for all but rather ONLY for SOME (but no supporter of this has been able to find even one verse that states that - and we all know why).

If you want to rile against Pelagianism, then start a thread on Pelagianism. But you won't find too many supporters of that. But you are riling against John 3:16, 1 John 2;2, Titus 2:11, Hebrews 2:9, 2 Corinthians 5:14-15, 1 John 4:14, John 1:29, 1 Timothy 4:10, 2 Corinthians 5:19, 1 Timothy 2:5-6 and many more, riling against 2000 years of Christianity.

Simply said, you are cherry-picking scripture at the expense of all the limited atonement passages. Universal Atonement depends on Free Will, already refuted by above by Luther. It ends up being Pelagianism, a heresy condemned by the church at Ephesus in 431.

In the end, the universal atonement adherents become enslaved to performing what they feel are good works for life to pay their way to heaven. Where the limited atonement adherents rely solely on Christ to save them, performing good works from out of a new heart, motivated by the love of God for saving them.

all the limited atonement passages.

They don't exist. There is no verse, not even one, that states, "Jesus did not die for all but only for some." You've not quoted the verse because it doesn't exist. If you had verses that teach Limited Atonement, you would have offered it but you didn't because you can't. In 500 years, no radical Calvinist has found even one verse that states, "Jesus did not die for all but only for some." Not one, much less "all."

I have quoted several (but far from all) that verbatim state, specifically, that Christ died for all. MANY verses. Verbatim. Specifically. Over and over. You just entirely dismissed and ignored them.

refuted by above by Luther.

Luther did not teach limited atonement. Luther taught universal grace. Now, yes, there is one snippet from very, very early in his life where it SEEMS he is speaking for limited atonement. Radical Calvinists quote that. But the quote below if far, far more typical:

"[Christ] work is not against one sin only, but against all my sin; and not against my sin only, but against the whole world's sin. He comes to take away not sickness only, but death; and not my death only, but the whole world's death" [WA 37: 201, Sermon for first Sunday in Advent, 1533]. That's obviously a very bold, clear affirmation of Universal Atonement... and it's very typical.

What does Scripture state? That Jesus died for all OR that He did NOT die for all but rather ONLY for some unnamed few? Unlimited Atonement or Limited Atonement?

And the verses that state, "No, Jesus did NOT die for all but ONLY for a few."

Crickets.

Everyone of those verses is limited to all of Gods Elect, from amongst the jews and gentiles.

Nope. Not one of them says "for only the Elect." You can IMPOSE that opinion upon the many verses, just as you could "for all (Republicans)" or "for all (Presbyterians)" but it's not what the verses state.

How can "for all" and "for the sins of the whole world" be construed as applying only to the Elect?

I understand that the smallish community of orthodox Calvinists would agree with you, even going so far as to disavow all missionary work since, after all, they think God has called everyone he wants, but it's no wonder that most Calvinists, not to mention all the rest of Christianity, find such an interpretation of Scripture to be untenable.

At the same time, we have to admit that if the orthodox Calvinists are, for some reason, correct about the Elect alone being called, missionary work would be pointless, despite Christ having explicitly instructed his Apostles to engage in it!

So? Do you think you saved yourself using your free will?

I don't believe the will is free in regards to salvation. I believe I've addressed that and so did Luther.

@Albion

My wife's family are all Calvinists. From WAY back, she has ancestors involved in the Scottish Reformation, lots of Reformed ministers among her ancestors. And she was raised in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church - an uber conservative Calvinist group.

When we were dating... and my beloved and I were discussing both joining the same church...,I had lots of discussions about Calvinism - including TULIP (it's all one jumbled, interconnect, unbiblical MESS).

To your question. LOGIC is how Calvinism is formed (Scripture interpreted to agree - even if Scripture says the verbatim, exact OPPOSITE). Here's how they look at it: If Jesus died for all then all are saved, or else Jesus was a big failure and goofed. Interesting.... the whole "logic" requires forgetting about faith, faith being irrelevant- only the Cross matters, faith doesn't. But that's another complicated, unbiblical MESS.

And to me, here's the more basis problem: Historically, Election has always been connected to FAITH, not the Cross. It's been understood (to put it too boldly) as some are chosen to be given faith - the faith that apprehends Christ's work (i'm a bit over simple there). Election has to do with the gift of faith. Where Calvinists went wrong, IMO, is they've connected it not to faith but to Jesus. Jesus died ONLY for some rather than God will give faith only to some. Traditionally, the "why some, not others" thing has been answered with faith - some have faith. Some radical Calvinists (after Calvin) changed that to "Jesus didn't die for all."

Not only is that a DIRECT, verbatim contradiction of a LOT of Scriptures (which boldly, undeniably, obviously say Jesus died for all) but as Lutherans point out, creates a "terror of the conscience." How do I know that Jesus is my Savior, that the Cross was also for me, that my faith is in something real for ME? Because it's for everyone, no exceptions. But these radical, latter-day Calvinists can only hope.... MAYBE Jesus died for me (but He didn't for most people).... MAYBE my faith is in something there for ME (but the odds are, it's not). For Lutherans, justification excapes me NOT because of the lack of Jesus but because of my lack of faith. If I have faith, then I DO rely on something real and for me because its real and there for EVERYONE.

My Calvinist relatives FREELY ADMITTED (volunteered!) that Limited Atonement is not found in the Bible... and that it DOES run head on with a lot of Scriptures. BUT they argue it's a "logical construct." It seems LOGICAL given what other Scriptures say. And they added, RARELY is this taught anymore. What tends to be taught is the EFFECTUAL Atonement is limited.... that Christ's work is EFFECTUAL only for the Elect. Okay. That's just a way of saying Universal Atonement is right.

I hope that helps.

Check this out...

It doesnt have to say that. Its a common given that Christ died specifically for Gods Elect, or Sheep. Who does Jesus specifically say He died for here Jn 10:11,15

11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father:
and I lay down my life for the sheep.

Excellent point. You remind us that this--one of the TULIP points--has been slighted in the discussion here as it has developed.

Easily, all the elect or all the Sheep.

The word all pas means:

  1. collectively
    1. some of all types

11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

and I lay down my life for the sheep.

Yup. Did Jesus die for brown eyed people? Yes. Does that prove that ergo He didn't die for all people, especially when Scripture says over and over and over - verbatim, exactly - that He died for all? Now, if this verse said "He giveth his life ONLY for the sheep" you might have a (weak) point, but the absolutely essential point of Limited Atonement - ONLY - is missing.

Over and over and over, Scripture says He died for "ALL"... but there's nothing that limits that in Scripture, we can't find "no, actually He didn't die for all but only for some few." If I wrote, "18 year olds can vote" does that prove ergo only they can vote?" Especially if I specifically, verbatim - over and over and over - state that all 18 and over may vote? See the issue?

And of course, what does Jesus say about sheep? That He has other sheep also, sheep that also are to be brought in.
