In what ways does your congregation promote itself? What I mean by that, is how does it make itself known to the community?

So the community is aware that it exists. We've had a couple newbies that said they never knew our little church was there nearby.

The church I attend is having a picnic on their grounds, which are in a small woodland in the middle of the suburbs. They made a flyer people can give to friends and neighbors. We have driven down the main road past this church's location for 32 years and never new it existed. Cannot see it from the main road and there is just a small sign out at the road.

Some readers might say that the church you've described really does need to make itself known, but that most churches are not in that same situation.

However, it's a fact that even congregations which have large memberships and large church buildings in prominent locations find that there are all sorts of people in the same town who have no idea what the denomination is, mistake it for a different one, and/or have no idea what it believes or does.

In other words, almost all congregations or parishes find that putting out some publicity about their activities is worth doing.

The only promotions I think mine does is advertise various events on Facebook with a place to either say that you’re “interested” or are “attending”. Also, we have church tshirts.

For my church, I'm doing some really short videos of some of the things we do when we're not in church. We have a Community Garden, a women's group, we collect things for charities, etc...

I am not against a church promoting itself. But, I am of the opinion that it doesn't have to. Or, it shouldn't have to.

A 'church' begins when a few believers gather together to worship God and Christ and fellowship with one another. However many or few they are doesn't matter. God provides in those members gifts of the Holy Ghost, to minister to that body. That includes pastor and teacher. And they function as a local church.

They are faithful in building upon the 'apostle's doctrine', as given in the Scripture. They share with one another what they have, making sure no believer is without. (Acts 2:42-47) And of course they naturally witness to those who are not believers.

And the Lord will add to the church who should be saved. (Acts 2:47)

I do miss the 'Statement of Faith' that churches use to have as you entered. I believe churches got away from that because they don't really know what they believe anymore or why, or care.

I agree with all of that. But think about it, even back in the 70s churches put their listing in phone books and some even put ads on placemats in diners.

Yes, I am sure churches have always promoted themselves and advertised their location. And in a large city, I can see how it would be a help. A local fellowship has to have a name.

But beyond that, it is my opinion that 'promoting' ones local church is not necessary. I don't consider inviting one to your church who you are witnessing to as 'promoting' your church. I consider that as evangelizing and trying to lead one to Christ.

Having a web page with info on it is promoting that church. Having a Facebook page for that church is promotion. Streaming the service is actually a form of promotion also.

More people used to go to church in years past than today. The younger people want to know what churches are doing beyond Sunday worship, so sharing that with them, is promotion, but also information to lead them there. It shows how we live our lives as little Christs and how the Gospel has changed us from the old Adam into the new Adam.

And a web page. And the services are streamed. And we’re listed in our local Contemporary Christian radio stations page for churches in the area. But I never thought of these things as promotions, I was thinking of commercials or something like that.

That's fine.

I just don't think it is necessary.
