To the Jew it's considered the sign of Jonas, and no it is not a western "day" it is purely 'nightfall to nightfall' Jewish days.
Were they supposed to take it as simply a metaphor for "completion"?
There no mention of the "high day" Sabbath in this article.
A day John refers to, and a day that does not fall on the weekly sabbath.
The high day sabbath falls 7 times a year (unless they fell on the same day) Jesus was in the grave for both sabbaths.

Well I suppose it's possible that the High Day Sabbath fell on the sabbath dayWithout looking, I am recalling that the Sabbath that year WAS a High Day...
So Christ died on Friday before that Sabbath could begin - eg prior to Sunset...
He spent the entire Sabbath High Day in Death's Dominion overcoming Death... From Sunset to Sunset...
And the third day He arose from the dead having overcome Death in His Own Human Flesh...
The third day "very early in the morning"...
In the wee hours of daybreak...
The first hint of the lightening of the darkness of night...
Mary Magdalene thinking Him to be the Gardner...
I have a very good friend who is an Anabaptist pastor who had adjusted his timeline as you did, and had all his ducks in a row proving his point of view, and was eager to prove himself right to all comers... I just smiled and said OK... And I prayed for him - No big - I do that all the time anyway... But this time God sent him a Messianic Jew, a really sharp guy, who said to him: "Look, Pastor - I know you think you have it figured out, but I am a Jew, and I am telling you, from all the even scientific data currently available for this time, and there is ONLY ONE POSSIBLE accounting for the facts of Scripture, where all the facts CAN align consistently, and that is the Fri - Sun account... So my friend listened carefully, did the research, and affirmed the Orthodox Catholic account... Glory to God!

That goes for all Sabbath days, the Preparation is always followed by the Sabbath whether it be the weekly sabbath or the seven annual high day Sabbath days. I'll take Josiahs and Albions explanation that 3 days is an idiom and not meaning 72 hours... I believe the other is possible as well, oh well who cares lol I guess we can never know for sure just as we don't know when Christ birthday actually was.Which narrows things considerably, all by itself...
Let me do the search - I think it was in John...

Joh 19:31
The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation,
that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath Day,
(for that Sabbath Day was an High Day,)
besought Pilate that their legs might be broken,
and that they might be taken away.
There you have it...
The condemned could not be left alive on their crosses for the Sabbath, lest it be defiled...
Breaking their legs caused immediate suffocation...
But Christ GAVE up His soul...

Yes but when John said "The Sabbath was a High Day" it does not mean that he is talking about the weekly Sabbath, it could mean that it fell on the weekly Sabbath but it doesn't specify, just that IT was a High Day Sabbath, which occurs seven times out of the year.John does record that this particular Sabbath WAS an High Day...
(for that Sabbath Day was an High Day,)
3 days means ANY portion of the three days...
And the Church Christ established has been consistent since the beginnings of it being Fri afternoon, Sat all night and all day, and Sun early morning...
That is how they have understood the Scripture they canonized and you are citing...
Time is not now what it was then understood...
Byzantine Time is Biblical Time...
Gen 1:5
And God called the light Day,
and the darkness he called Night.
And the evening and the morning
were the first day.
The Day ends with the setting of the sun...
Which begins the Night...
Night followed by Day was the first day...
Which defines a Biblical day...

True and I agree, I just found it logical but I quickly disregard it as it's not any thing fundamental or of value. The outcome does not change, makes for a good and rather swift conversationAin't so sure about all that....
And of course, we have no idea what year all this happened in...
I think we're looking at all this as modern Westerners .... and making WAY too much of it.
Like I said, if its on a sunday then 3 days ago would seem to be friday, although not 72 solid hours so I suppose it was just parts of three days where a high day sabbath ended up on the weekly sabbath. Right?[Luk 24:19-21 NLT] 19 "What things?" Jesus asked. "The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth," they said. "He was a prophet who did powerful miracles, and he was a mighty teacher in the eyes of God and all the people. 20 But our leading priests and other religious leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him. 21 We had hoped he was the Messiah who had come to rescue Israel. This all happened three days ago.
Do the math.
