The second oldest trick is misrepresenting the sin. If the villain was a horse or a gorilla, then a clear case of honest confusion could be made. But it was a snake, a species that knows no vegetarian varieties. Adam and Eve weren't eating fruit.

That phrase is used to refer to an easily recognizable attempt to deceive. It’s spoken by the person who is the subject of deception, either honestly in that the person detected the attempt at deception immediately, or dishonestly, in that the person was actually deceived but only claimed to recognize it after the fact. The word “oldest” doesn’t really mean anything related to age. It’s just as an intensifier communicating ease of recognition.
