Is it an option to get a hand mill with an electric attachment? If you like the idea of being self-sufficient even if the power goes out it seems like a good option, so you can save the manual effort but if you can't use electricity for some reason you can still mill.

Since I assume you're not using an enormous great thing, can you fashion something that's essentially a small scale windmill or hydro mill? It seems like a cool concept to have a water wheel that drives a millstone, even if only a fairly small millstone. Most of my dreams (mostly pipedreams) about going totally off-grid feature some kind of power generation from a stream or river.

I've looked and haven't found a dual hand/electric option. A small scale windmill or hydro mill is an interesting idea, for the burbs where I live. However, my talents do not lie in creating such a contraption. The manual effort doesn't concern me provided it's efficient.

I'm not sure my skills would lead to a hugely efficient first cut of such a machine but it seems like it might be interesting to try it out, as long as you live in a place that gets enough wind to power the thing or have access to a river/stream with a decent bit of water flow.

If you've got something with a hand crank it seems you should be able to replace the hand crank with a crank attached to a motor, even if the motor is then attached to nothing more exotic than a hefty battery.

Getting frustrated with using a router to cut a dado in pieces of wood. It's not a difficult process, it's just tedious because it requires constantly moving clamps. Ordinarily I'd just use a clamp at either end as guides to keep the router in the correct path but for this I'd need the clamps to be mostly off the edges of the wood. Using a similar piece of wood on the ends isn't a good solution because I end up with inadequate force holding the workpiece in place. Maybe I need to cut a jig so I can clamp the jig in place to stop the workpiece moving, then clamp another piece over the top to guide the router. It would certainly make things a whole lot easier - I could potentially even make the jig slightly bigger so I could cut multiple pieces at once. That would be handy.

I went out for a walk in the cold. It was cold but I prefer walking outdoors to indoors, even if only for the change of scenery and what little sunlight there was today. Usual issues with thermal management - sweating when it's cold isn't particularly good but as long as I can maintain body heat I'm OK. My wife said my hands were like ice a couple of hours later although this time of year I'm quite happy running colder than most. Left to my own devices I don't mind if the bedroom drops to the low 50s overnight but if it goes much under 60 she feels the cold.

Now just debating what to do with the evening. With these winter days and the covidocracy getting ever sillier it's sometimes hard to get motivated to do much.

Going for my routine scope this afternoon and saw online that there is construction in the area where I have to go so I hope I am not too late getting to my appointment. At least it didn't snow last night so I don't have to shovel this morning again like yesterday.

Even the loony liberal New York Times seems to be changing its tune on all things COVID. Today's update included an article about whether we should be trying to eliminate all risk, and leaned on an article from the Atlantic about how the early attempts to rein in AIDS by telling gay men they needed to stop having sex were utterly useless.

It only took the NYT several months to find the article. Remarkable to see such a left-leaning publication shift from absolute terror to something at least a little more nuanced. They even went as far as to suggest there was - horror - no need to put a sock on your head if you're outdoors and not near any other people.

I’m at work waiting for the clerks to separate all the packages so I can go deliver the mail in bitterly cold weather. Only 1 year and 4 months to go for retirement!

I just ate a waffle for breakfast. Going to surf the net for a while since my husband went back to bed for a nap. He gets up way too early on weekends!

Morning coffee before maybe spending some time tinkering on the computer. I've got some stuff to put on the church web site and want to get a web site of my own resurrected. It's long overdue - it was something like two years ago the host company managed to not only destroy the site but also destroy all the backups. I've got the source material and the source code but need to rebuild the database behind it. Maybe it will inspire me to get out there and do some more other stuff.

Fun evening with friends, playing games and drinking beer. Not too much beer, as our friends had to drive home afterwards, but shared a couple of tasty ones.
