Howdy sup there! How are you? Today, just playing some games on my phone before rocking myself to sleep tonight.

Fun With Caulking.

The shower cubicle was looking a bit manky and the caulking around the seams was definitely past its prime. Yesterday I addressed the caulking around the corner between the top of the cubicle and the wall tiles, and in the process noticed that the rest of the caulking could use some TLC.

So this morning I got busy with a scraper, took a couple of pieces of trim off, peeled away a load of nasty dated caulking and replaced it with nice fresh caulking. Parts of it were remarkably easy to remove - a scraper at one end and several feet of it just peeled away. Other parts were less easy.

Now we're waiting for it to set nice and solid before taking a shower. Hopefully this will last a good long time before needing more attention.

It has taken an inordinately long time for my caulking to set. It has a skin on it, as it should have by now. It's not fully set several hours after applying it. Perhaps it's too cold and humid in that room. I've put a heater in there to warm it up a bit but for now I think we're just going to use the shower and try not to get anything too wet. We normally spray away from the door, so it shouldn't be a problem. Worst case is that I get to apply some more caulking tomorrow. If it comes to that I have 10 tubes of the stuff, so should be OK.

Preparing for another rolling black out/power outage. We lost power for 1 hour at our home yesterday morning and at the Post Office for almost an hour. Evergy has been implementing controlled, temporary emergency electricity reductions. I understand this is happening in multiple states across the US.

I need to revisit a short stretch of my caulking. I'm not sure how I missed it when I checked over my work but there's a few inches that didn't take properly. If I get that done this morning hopefully it will be ready by this evening so we can shower without worrying about it.

Woke up to a gun being fired outside. I think it was at the Amish farm across the field.

Happy Friday all! How are you? This morning, I’ve just had the most pleasant and relaxing walk, meditation, breathing exercises and yoga sessions outside in the bitter cold, currently feeling like -16, without anyone bothering me on the road by my home. The afternoon, just relaxing online before hitting the bed tonight.

Shoveled some snow this morning. Now finishing off a lazy morning. I really want to get on with taking down my chimney breast but it means working in a confined space in the crawl space behind my attic, which has no insulation at all. It's pretty cold there. I'd need to wear eye protection so it might have to wait until it's at least a little warmer - the last thing I want is to be trying to use a hammer and chisel when everything is fuzzy because my glasses fogged up again.

Uh, no. I'd rather be lazy this weekend!

Me too. Although the main reason I've made exactly no progress on taking out my chimney is because it's so cold up there. I need to get into the confined crawl space, right into the very corner where the sloped roof meets the back wall, with no insulation and no floorboards, and try to chisel out the mortar so I can remove the bricks. In this cold weather it's hard to see how it would be very successful, given the chances of my safety glasses fogging up is very high. I can't really do that work without eye protection and don't want to be trying to move around in a confined space with no floor with fogged glasses.

It's supposed to be warmer these next few days so maybe I'll have chance to make a start on it then. Another consideration is that removing the top few layers of bricks in the chimney will leave a hole in the ceiling nearly two feet square, meaning the icy cold air from the attic can blow freely down into the main house. So I'll need to find something to fill the hole as soon as possible. I'll also need to add some bracing to the ceiling joists as a precaution, and I'd really rather not be doing that while freezing air gushes through the hole.

I've got some pieces of drywall I pulled down from the walls that I should be able to cut to size to fill the hole, even if only as a temporary measure. Physically blocking the hole is the crucial thing - I can throw some cellulose over the top, or use some fiberglass offcuts to fill the gap for now. Once it's done it will probably make a big difference to the rest of that part of the house, since I won't have freezing cold air seeping between the chimney and the rear wall.

Oh yeah, wait until it's warmer. We might get up to the 50s on Wednesday where I live!
