Me too. Although the main reason I've made exactly no progress on taking out my chimney is because it's so cold up there. I need to get into the confined crawl space, right into the very corner where the sloped roof meets the back wall, with no insulation and no floorboards, and try to chisel out the mortar so I can remove the bricks. In this cold weather it's hard to see how it would be very successful, given the chances of my safety glasses fogging up is very high. I can't really do that work without eye protection and don't want to be trying to move around in a confined space with no floor with fogged glasses.
It's supposed to be warmer these next few days so maybe I'll have chance to make a start on it then. Another consideration is that removing the top few layers of bricks in the chimney will leave a hole in the ceiling nearly two feet square, meaning the icy cold air from the attic can blow freely down into the main house. So I'll need to find something to fill the hole as soon as possible. I'll also need to add some bracing to the ceiling joists as a precaution, and I'd really rather not be doing that while freezing air gushes through the hole.
I've got some pieces of drywall I pulled down from the walls that I should be able to cut to size to fill the hole, even if only as a temporary measure. Physically blocking the hole is the crucial thing - I can throw some cellulose over the top, or use some fiberglass offcuts to fill the gap for now. Once it's done it will probably make a big difference to the rest of that part of the house, since I won't have freezing cold air seeping between the chimney and the rear wall.
