Got a few more bits and pieces seen to in my work room. I found the glass in the exterior door was a little loose so got some sealant around that. That will help stop drafts coming around the glass and also stop the glass from rattling when traffic goes past outside. I got some door sealing foam put into place, got another featherboard pulled down (this one was tricky because it's at ceiling level and it's hard to get a ladder where I need it), and got a load of the crud vacuumed up and a load of wood taken out. After lunch I can apply a little more sealant to a spot I missed on one of the windows, spray some foam into a cavity behind a ceiling joist that seems to be a source of one of a few drafts, and spend some time doing the brick repair work I had planned to do before finding more pressing things to do.

Howdy sup there? Today, since it's another awfully cold, dark and gloomy day outside, just enjoying my usual TV show before hitting the bed tonight.

Hello morning all! How are you? Today, just been catching up on sleep as I've had yet again another very bad night last night.

Hideously disturbed sleep last night for reasons unknown, so a hugely unproductive day today. At least I got my daily walk in. I might see about spraying some building foam later, that doesn't require too much thought or precision. Then perhaps I can write some more code and watch TV.

I don't like such unproductive days much. I hope I sleep better tonight.

Yo sup there all man! How are you today? Today, because it's another freezing cold, snowing, dark and gloomy day outside, currently feeling like -2C, just relaxing online before hitting the sack tonight.

Music: Have started 2 new works, in the baroque style. One was an experiment: writing out the baseline first without thought of chord progression, which is something I have done before, but not frequently.

Making a fair amount of flat bread today to eat over the next few days.

I got my foam sprayed this morning. A can of foam did everything I needed, except for the last three inches or so. I don't yet have enough spaces I need to fill to make it worth using another can - I can always spray extra foam into existing places but I'd rather plan to do that with the scraps of a can rather than with most of a can.

Next up is some repair work on some really shoddy patches of my concrete block wall. You can easily see which bricks are part of the extension and which are not. The part I'm working in is definitely part of the extension.

I decided to spray the extra foam. I figured a can of foam is only $6 and if I end up throwing away half of it the chances are the $3 worth of wasted foam is still going to be trivial compared to the potential savings on the heating bills. As it happened I managed to find places to spray the entire can. Now I have one can of foam remaining.

I checked the room above where I sprayed previously and found I only half-filled the gap I thought was closer to completely filled. So it will take at least one can of foam sprayed from above to fill the rest of the gap. I'd rather not have to do that but I definitely had drafts coming in from the space and there isn't anywhere near enough room to properly patch the brickwork, so spray foam is the best I can muster. It will stop drafts coming in and also stop water vapor ingress, so it will have to be good enough.

Maybe it's time to visit the hardware store to get some more foam....

Cutting the very ends off some floorboards. The room I've been working in is less drafty now so I decided to explore a particular area from the room above. Sure enough, multiple gaps in the brickwork but behind the joist so there's less than an inch between the wood and the brickwork. Spraying foam in from below obviously stopped the cold air seeping downwards, so now I just need to clear out the space as best I can and spray foam in from above to seal all the gaps and stop air going anywhere else.

With the benefit of hindsight I wish I'd done this work before spraying foam, it's just that I thought the foam I sprayed filled the gap rather than just the bottom half of the gap. I'll need to find something long and narrow to reach into the space from above to fish out the odd scraps of floorboard that fell into the gap, then blow it all out with an air compressor, then I can get busy spraying some more foam. While I was looking closely at everything I spotted a couple of other dodgy bits of cement work so I can get those fixed up. I've got some errands to run today and no light in the upper room so some of that work will need to wait for another day.

Spent some time tidying the disaster area that is my basement, and mostly finished the work I described earlier. I sprayed an entire can of foam into the space, only to find I ran out of foam barely two feet from the end. I don't have any more foam so couldn't finish the job.

The room I've been working in is still chilly but doesn't feel drafty any more. I still have an issue in one corner, which will mean taking out a bunch more units. I just haven't figured out how to do that yet and where I'm going to put everything pending putting it all back.
