Annoyingly I realised I forgot to mark and cut holes for the back boxes in the baseboards I stained yesterday. Annoying to have to haul them around again to mark and cut them, but I can be glad I noticed before I lacquered them. I hope I can mark them in a way that shows over the stain. If I can't I'll have to drill and cut from the other side, but that potentially means refinishing the stain if I get very much chip-out.

I had hoped to be lacquering my baseboards long before now but the stain was still a bit sticky. I'm not sure if I put too much stain on, didn't wipe enough off once it had sat there, or if closing the basement window overnight meant it wasn't able to fully dry out.

On a positive note I can still mark the board with my pencil, so cutting the holes out isn't going to be an exercise in annoyance.

I decided to press on and lacquer my baseboards even though I haven't cut the back box holes in them yet. I figure it's easier to put paper tape on them to mark them once the lacquer is fully dried, than it is to try and mark something that's almost as dark as the marks. I'd hate to ruin my boards by running my jigsaw along what I thought was my pencil line but turned out to be a flaw in the wood or a piece of grain or something.

So now the boards are sitting in the basement with their first coat of lacquer drying. In about three hours I can run some fine sandpaper over them and give them a second coat. By morning they will be ready to be marked and cut.

Another advantage of putting tape on them is that the tape can help prevent chipout, although in fairness that's more of a problem on the bottom face, which isn't an issue because it will be against the wall.

The rate I'm going I might even get this room finished before the end of the month. Then all it needs is an occupant :)

The lacquer took longer to dry than I expected. I couldn't open the window because it's cold outside, which means it will naturally take longer. Now it seems to be dry so I can give it a quick rub with some fine sandpaper and put a second coat on. That can dry overnight. Thankfully with two pieces of board to lacquer and a small pot of lacquer to work with the smell doesn't get too bad.

Nice walk in the sun with my wife. Legs not really feeling it today - we both felt like it was a bit of a slog - but managed to maintain an OK pace. Now debating whether I've got time to do some more woodwork before a Zoom meeting with a couple of friends. I'm hoping the second coat of lacquer has dried fully, as I need to put paper tape on it to mark out where to cut a hole.

I started working on my garden today but need to run to Lowes for a few things now.

I need to get some wood. Going to see if my local lumber yard is open - their prices are much better than the big box hardware stores. I need to get some material to finish making my baseboards - one piece I took off splintered past the point I really want to try and reuse it, and I need an extra length because I took out a doorway.

I thought the wood I pried off the walls was red oak but a friend who does quite a lot of woodworking thought it might be pine. It's handy if it is pine - pine is less than half the price of red oak. I'll be staining it dark anyway, it's just good if the grain patterns are at least similar.

My wood is definitely pine, but it's antique pine and finding something to match it is proving impossible. The closest I can get is something waaaaaay bigger, so I'm calling on a friend with a bigger and better woodshop than mine to help me cut it down to what I need.
