It's raining here too. Today's fun is sanding the floor in the room I'm working on. My wife and I are undecided what color to paint the room so I'm debating whether to get some white paint so I can paint the ceiling, then I can sand the floor without worrying about dripping paint onto it and needing to sand over those patches again. If needs be I've got a load of spare sheets I can lay down to protect the floor during painting.
I think I'm going to empty my separator bucket first and see if I can attach the shop vac hose to the sander. It has a dust bag but it's surprising how fast that fills up, and I suspect attaching the vacuum to the back will suck up a lot of the dust that would otherwise end up spread across the floor. Once the coarse sanding is done to level the floor and remove the slight bumps and dips caused by the cupping of the boards I can run the random orbital sander over it with a finer grit of paper to smooth it off before finishing it. Not sure yet whether we'll stain it or just put a tough lacquer on it.
I still need to get some wood to make new baseboards. I've got some of the previous baseboards available but I'm not sure how much is fully re-usable. One piece had a hole cut in it for an electrical backbox, only the backbox isn't there any more because I rejigged all the electrics in the room. Another piece is too short because there was a door to a small closet, and the door is gone now. I'll need to check to see if my lumber dealer is open, and just how much I need. Then I get the fun job of trying to match the stain on new lumber to the stain on the existing lumber. I really don't want to have to sand the existing lumber back to bare wood so I can restain it - some of the pieces are fairly straightforward but some of them are going to be really tricky to sand evenly.
