Today I got to play with the lathe some more. I took a fairly thin flat piece of sycamore and turned it into a square plate.

Then I took a branch of sycamore and turned it into a near-spherical bowl with a flat bottom to stop it rolling around. Holling out the middle of that was tricky but I got there in the end. I was pleased with it. My wife loved it. I sent a photo to my daughter and she loved it. My wife decided my daughter could have it, but asked me to make another one.

Anyone want to guess what I'm doing over the weekend?

No woodwork for me today.

I went into town to help my daughter with some admin stuff and just as I was finishing up I got a text from a friend asking if I wanted to meet for a swift beer over lunch. I hadn't seem him for a few weeks so went and did that, and by the time I'd got a walk in it was getting late for messy woodwork. He did give me a couple of nice pieces of wood to play with, which was a bonus.

Maybe over the weekend I can turn some more things. The round bowl I made yesterday is looking good, I put some beeswax finish on it while it was still on the lathe - it's easy to apply something when the workpiece is turning steadily. Then I cut the tenon off the bottom and sanded it, and put a coat of wax to dry overnight. It's looking nice. I think my next task is to turn something similar for my wife, then think about turning something big with one of the larger pieces of wood I've got lined up in my garage now.

We're finishing up some landscaping projects today! Here's the little section we did yesterday. A couple months ago I asked ChatGPT to give me ideas and I thought I wanted round stepping stones, but my husband said the slope was too steep and they wouldn't work. He was right. We needed to make gradual levels like we did in the finished photo.

Went this morning to church; it was Prison Ministry weekend for our local SDA church (we have a prison ministry that goes over to the minimum wing at Foothills Correctional nearby to minister to the inmates there). After the service we had a fellowship lunch and then I came home and slept most of the day.

A bit of personal mental health self-care if you will. :)

Church this morning, then a small celebration with my daughter and one granddaughter.

This evening I turned a small bowl for my wife, from a piece of sycamore.

Ugh.

It's that time of year again. So far my morning has consisted of preparing tax forms. I should have done it earlier, I know.

Look at it as a blessing that you make enough money to owe taxes.

It doesn't make it any less frustrating filling in the same information in multiple places...

ETA: I need to file a return as soon as my annual income hits $33. That's thirty three dollars, I didn't miss anything off the end.

Aside from the tedium of taxes, I got to spend a little time on my lathe today.

I also picked up some very nice pieces of red oak that I'm going to make into windowsills.

My husband has a dentist appointment and took the rest of the day off, so after his appointment, we'll hit the trails for a few miles.

Today I get to spend some time cutting windowsills, and finishing up the bowl I started turning yesterday. So far I've cut the outside shape of it, although I think I'm going to tweak the shape to make it a little more striking. Then I get to hollow it out. That's tricky with the kind of shape that has a narrow hole at the top. Wide open bowls are so much easier.

I managed to score a couple of maple logs while out running today. I saw a couple of guys standing beside the obvious remains of a tree, so stopped and asked them about it. The wood was spoken for - it was destined to be firewood - but they agreed to let me take a couple of small pieces for my lathe.
