Oh, Andrew. Don't be bored! I'm here. Well, for now. I'm watching a movie on Netflix so I'm kind of here and kind of not.

I watched The Edge of Seventeen. It was okay, kind of funny in parts. A coming of age type of film about an awkward girl in high school with only one real friend who gets mad because her friend starts to date her brother.

Fun With Windows today.

I figured I have a draft getting around my windows somehow. It lets cold air through in the winter, hot air through in the summer, and road noise through year-round. So I decided to see if gaps around the window frames were the problem. I picked a window in the living room, pried off the wooden trim only to be reminded that the lath-and-plaster wall goes behind the trim. So I had a bit of a mess to make. Working slowly so I didn't throw clouds of dust into our living room I cut away the plaster, then cut the laths and before I'd even got that far I could feel a draft coming through. So I figured I was onto something here.

Once I'd got it all cut away I cleared all the dust and general debris out of the space, sprayed foam around all the seams and all the edges, filled the cavity with fiberglass and pinned the trim back into place. Just a couple of pins for now, so I can get it off easily later when it's time to fully fix up this room.

It feels quieter already. There are three more windows that will want the same TLC but so far it's looking good. Once all four windows in this room are done if it's making a substantial difference I'm going to do the same in the bedrooms upstairs. I really will need to be careful there - the last thing I want is a layer of dust on our bed.

Let me know how it goes, I just started getting into it myself and got my copy in the mail a few days ago, it's been very interesting so far.

Lazy evening. My wife and I went out for lunch, which was nice. Tomorrow I get another helping of Fun With Windows. I'm going to pry off the trim from another two, maybe three, windows and give them the spray treatment. Hopefully that will make a big difference to the noise from the road. Then I get to do the same in the study and in the guest bedroom.

My fun with windows was taking off the plastic and having the paint peel off some of the window sills. :( Now I have to sand and paint.

My windowsills are stone so no worries there. There is some wooden trim behind the metal flashing, and at some point I may try to find someone who can take the flashing off, replace the trim, and put the flashing back on again. I'm hesitant to do that myself, largely because I need upstairs windows done and I'm not thrilled about balancing on a ladder for that length of time. I'm also a little wary of work where a leak could cause woodwork to rot. I'm not entirely sure it would matter since the windows are uPVC, I'd just rather not deal with rotting wood because the flashing wasn't right.

Trying to plan some vacation days. I've found a few things semi-local, maybe a bit of time camping, and will call the family tomorrow to see when might be a good time for a trip home

Worked on a couple more windows. One of them was really interesting - for a small section all that was between inside and outside was.... nothing. The sealant between the flashing and the exterior brickwork had perished and I could see a crack of daylight from inside. So I did a little contortionism, leaned out of the window to scrape away the perished sealant before applying some fresh sealant, then sprayed a load of foam into the cavity behind it. I went through almost an entire can of foam between the two windows but the difference in noise level is already remarkable before I put the fiberglass back into the cavities.

Now I'm thinking of what I might be able to use to pour into the cavity from the top, if I can seal the front of it. It would be pretty neat to have a solid lump in place of the air gap at the moment.

Part of getting at the window cavity included removing a wall stud, which was temporarily housing the bracket that holds the window blind. That means I can't close the blind until I've got the stud back on the wall, which will take a little while because I found a gap in the wall behind the stud. Maybe I'll get to that on Monday, get the stud back in place, and then put the blind back in place.

Ran/Walked 7.2 miles around a lake today after church. I ran most of the first four miles and walked the last mile because I was pretty worn out by then. It was a overcast day with some wind. I noticed the lake has suffered a lot of trees down with our recent storms. I'm thinking about maybe doing a 10k run in a few months

This morning it was 41 degrees outside, so I'd expect the unheated room to be somewhere in the low 50s. I was pleasantly surprised to see the thermometer in there reading 59 this morning. So I guess my can of foam in the window cavities has made a big difference to the temperature as well as the noise. Hopefully it will mean the air conditioner won't have to work as hard this summer either. That room has a section of roof above it that leaks, so I've arranged for a local roofer to come and look at it. I want that fixed before I press on with much more work in there - no point doing a load of work if a good storm gets stuff wet and I have to revisit everything.

I'm hoping that room will represent something of a quick win as far as rebuilding it is concerned. I've figured out how to get nice new cables in there, and it's going to be about as close to a simple box shape as I can imagine. I had planned to keep it as a study but given how much I've already cut the noise and heat loss I'm thinking it might be a bedroom.

One of my clients is in the hospital in the psychiatric unit, so I spent the morning there seeing him and now doing some paperwork and planning out my week.

Happy to be going to see family in June - joining them for a classic car tour through Wisconsin with a few days in Michigan before and after. The rest of vacation time may have to be a bit more local. I thought of doing some camping, but most of the sites where I wanted to go are already reserved for the season. So probably some driving and sight-seeing around Vancouver island

Can you hike and camp, without using a specific camp site?
