Fun With Windows today.
I figured I have a draft getting around my windows somehow. It lets cold air through in the winter, hot air through in the summer, and road noise through year-round. So I decided to see if gaps around the window frames were the problem. I picked a window in the living room, pried off the wooden trim only to be reminded that the lath-and-plaster wall goes behind the trim. So I had a bit of a mess to make. Working slowly so I didn't throw clouds of dust into our living room I cut away the plaster, then cut the laths and before I'd even got that far I could feel a draft coming through. So I figured I was onto something here.
Once I'd got it all cut away I cleared all the dust and general debris out of the space, sprayed foam around all the seams and all the edges, filled the cavity with fiberglass and pinned the trim back into place. Just a couple of pins for now, so I can get it off easily later when it's time to fully fix up this room.
It feels quieter already. There are three more windows that will want the same TLC but so far it's looking good. Once all four windows in this room are done if it's making a substantial difference I'm going to do the same in the bedrooms upstairs. I really will need to be careful there - the last thing I want is a layer of dust on our bed.
