Having a coffee, thinking about heading down to the hardware store to see if they have any spare buckets I can use to make a separator for the really fine dust from my plaster walls. I already blew up one shop vac and would really rather not blow up any more of them.

Got a load more wall pulled down, and I'm going to need to make my new water-based separator to get the fine dust sorted out or I'm going to blow up another shop vac in short order. I have a bucket with some plumbing bits in it ready to be cut to size and assembled. Hopefully this will work and spare me having to go through filters on my vac at a rate of knots. When a filter costs $16 and can go from brand new to clogged within less than 10 minutes, I need an alternative solution.

The clogged filter can pay a visit to Mr Air Compressor to get cleaned out. That's an outside job because it blows a fog bank of fine dust everywhere. I'm looking at options to make some kind of mongrel system out of my latest shop vac, maybe trying to pair the head of the new one with the body of the dead one (the dead body takes HEPA filter bags, which can be handy), or even cobbling something together to incorporate water-based separation into the body of the new vac. That would be really handy - it would let me use my existing separator to capture larger pieces and then have the shop vac itself capture the fine dust in its own water bath, rather than needing another bucket, another hose etc. It would be kinda fun to build something completely new, using only the head of the shop vac and seeing where I can go from there.

Going to have to think about options here.... brain cogs are spinning wildly.

Getting frustrated with my water-based separator. I decided I was going to try and build it inside the shop vac rather than using another bucket, because that makes life easier when carrying it around. With it inside the shop vac it means I have a bucket I use as a separator to take out the big chunks, then the shop vac has a water trap to take out the fine dust. If I made it outside the shop vac I'd have one bucket to catch the lumps, then another bucket to catch the fine dust, then the shop vac. So I'd have three containers and three hoses.

Sadly building it inside the shop vac soon revealed I was missing a plumbing elbow, so I went to the hardware store to get one. Having built it all I found my sealant won't seal to the side of the shop vac, which is a nuisance but I can work around it. And then I found that the suction agitates the water, so I'm going to need the sleeve used for sucking up a wet mess. I don't have the sleeve, so I guess I'm going to the hardware store again in the morning. I really hope it works after all this, it will be hugely frustrating if the final conclusion is that it's still not right. If it comes to that I might end up putting this shop vac in the woodshop to catch fine sawdust and use the other shop vac to deal with the dust. I just don't want to blow up another $80+ shop vac if I can avoid it.

Finally my water-based separator is complete. Sadly today was a day I needed to be cleaned up and presentable early on, so testing it may end up waiting until tomorrow. Doing anything with it involves handling fine dust, and I don't have a lot of interest in either getting my more presentable clothes dirty or in changing and getting myself dirty enough to need to shower again.
