I love snow but am looking forward to the furnace spending more time off than on.

I know what you mean. Gas bills can get high. Mine wasn't too bad. Makes me wonder if gas prices have gone down.

I have to turn my heat up when it gets really cold outside because I have drafts in here. The one window won't close tight and is off about a half inch or three quarters. I tried to shut it tight but it won't budge. Cold air seeps in and the blinds move the draft is so strong. I don't want my birds to catch cold that's why I turn the heat way up when it gets below 30 and windy.

The snow is pretty from looking at it on the inside but I don't like driving in it.

Why not get some insulation and jam it in the space? You can get a roll of fiberglass for less than 10 bucks. For a draught like that it should pay for itself within a winter.

I wouldn't know where to buy fiberglass, do you?

Any large hardware store should sell it. I usually get mine from Lowe's but don't know what stores you'd have near you. It's been a while since I bought some (still got a couple of spare rolls in the attic) but I vaguely remember paying something like $5-6 per roll. The first time I bought it I left my wife behind so I could fit more rolls in the car. I think I got an extra five rolls in the space she would have taken up.

As it happens I spent some time this evening hunting some draughts. I think I found one, and hunting another one I found some rather elderly plumbing that will probably need to be fixed at some point in the not too distant future. I shudder to think what will be involved, there's a rather dodgy looking join between some nice new white PVC pipework and a very old and very large pipe that looks like it's cast iron.

Just checked, I don't know where in NE Ohio you are but there are some Lowe's stores around Mentor/Akron/Cleveland etc. If you go to their site you can use the "Find a Store" link to find one near you.

I am in the Cleveland area and know where a large hardware store is. It might be Lowes or DIY. Not sure. Thanks for your helpful advice. :)

It's best to use gloves when handling fiberglass. Personally if I'm only handling a small amount of it I don't worry too much but if you have sensitive skin it wouldn't hurt.

If you're blocking a gap in a window you'll also want to put something on the outside to stop the fiberglass getting wet if rain blows against the window. Depending on how accessible the window is, the decor etc you could use anything from some clingfilm to tape or similar. Or, since you probably won't be using a lot of fiberglass, you could just replace it if it gets wet.

Good afternoon, everyone. Here in the states, have you heard of the BIG snow storm coming through again? It makes me glad that I am home and safe and not having to venture out much onto the freeway and otherwise. Otherwise, this seems to be a nice day, although cold in this part of the world.

Welcome Pearls of Wisdom! I haven't heard about the upcoming snowstorm yet. Where is it supposed to hit? Today is a pretty nice day here even if it is Winter.
