It's just the opposite. It was not called Fat Tuesday until recently, not very commonly anyway. Now it seems to be the only term we hear.
My apologies, I posted during a work break and wasn't very clear. What I meant was that observation of Shrove Tuesday seems to be something borne of tradition rather than Scriptural calling. Whatever we call it, observing it at all as a specific day seems to be a man-made creation.
