It's just the opposite. It was not called Fat Tuesday until recently, not very commonly anyway. Now it seems to be the only term we hear.

My apologies, I posted during a work break and wasn't very clear. What I meant was that observation of Shrove Tuesday seems to be something borne of tradition rather than Scriptural calling. Whatever we call it, observing it at all as a specific day seems to be a man-made creation.

Sure...but so are gift-giving at Christmastime, crosses in cemeteries, and a lot else that is part of our culture AND testifies to our religion. To remove all of that and make society completely secular, absent anything that could suggest a Christian connection, would be very sad--in my humble opinion. Fat Tuesday replacing Shrove Tuesday is one example.
