My run on Sunday was harder than I'd planned. My suggested workout was at a threshold pace and I didn't feel like doing that. I considered setting up an open-ended base run but in the end decided to just do a completely free run where my watch would only beep at me if my pulse went very high. I clocked the first mile faster than I've ever done that stretch before, and the second and third miles weren't far off. I did overdo it trying to maintain speed up a sustained hill, which meant I missed my 5k personal best. Had I had more time to run I would have extended my 5-mile route into a 10k and probably shaved a chunk off my personal best. But I didn't have time, so I stuck to 5 miles.
Comparing the metrics of that run with running the same route a couple of years back when I first got this particular fitness watch was remarkable. Much faster speeds, more sustained speed, far fewer breaks to walk, and barely half the exercise load. So I guess I'm doing something right.
