The summer humidity is really wrecking my running times. I'm 30-45 seconds per mile slower than my winter runs and really struggling to keep my pulse down in the heat. I'm usually OK for 2-3 miles and then need to slow the pace a little or take more walk breaks. Still, I keep plodding on running my 5-mile loop instead of the longer loops. When it starts to cool off a bit I can get back to the longer loops. I'm looking forward to that.

Yeah, I haven't felt like going to the park to hike so I've been doing miles around my neighborhood. It gets boring seeing the same things over and over again.

Even on a cooler day like today the humidity makes running hard for me. I'm sticking with the 5-mile loop rather than the longer loops but doing it more often. Today I ran in the morning and then walked in the evening with my wife. Weather permitting I'll run again on Monday.

We went to the preserve yesterday since the gate to the county park was closed and did 3 miles. There was one section we hadn't done yet, so we tried it and it had a mini bamboo forest that was almost black inside since it was so dark! CREEEPY. I didn't know bamboo blocked out so much light!

Bamboo is fun. I had some growing in a pot at my last house. I couldn't take it with us when we moved (long story) so left it there for the next residents. I wonder if they still have it.

There were some news articles about how bamboo can get out of contro. It's not native to the area I live in so it's becoming a nuisance.

It needs to be contained... what I had was in a pot. I think if you want to grow it in the ground you need to figure out how far you want it to spread and line a trench with concrete blocks, and only then introduce the bamboo. If you left any gaps between the blocks the chances are the bamboo will find it.

I still toy with the idea of growing some here, I'm just not sure I want to put in the work required to dig a suitable hole and line it with concrete.

Yeah, that's a lot of work!!

Okay, it's even muggier than it has been lately outside so I don't know if I want to try to walk at all. I went out to get some zucchini from my containers and could barely breathe.

The extreme heat and air quality alerts has put a damper in a lot of my walking. I try to get up extra early and it's still hot outside. Today I didn't want to sweat before church, so I walked in the basement for a while in the afternoon. I'm getting over 10,000 steps a day and I'd like to keep the momentum going.

I skipped out of the earlier parts of church today and went for a run before it got hot. I ducked in late to hear the sermon but didn't get much out of it. It's been really hot here, I've spent most of the afternoon in my recliner with the air conditioner running.

Today I waited for my neighbor to contact me about going for a walk, but by 8:30 I couldn't wait any further and just went out. It was really muggy by then and I couldn't go very far. I can't wait for autumn.

I went hiking. It wasn't as warm as it has been recently but the first hour was horribly muggy. By the time I reached the top of the mountain I was practically soaked with sweat. At the overlook part way down the other side the breeze was very pleasant, and the descent was also nice. Now I just need the spiders that spin webs across the trail to go somewhere else.

The spider webs!! That's one thing we hate about being the first ones out on a trail. There is a small footbridge across a creek on one of our favorite trails that we take turns at going through first because we know the webs are there. It's my husband's turn next time, just so you know LOL We're good at keeping track.

The trails I hike vary from very light to moderate traffic. At the weekend they are busier, but I avoid the weekends if I can.

Yesterday I found a length of branch that was light enough to hold in front of me, and had enough smaller branches on it that it covered about knee height to above head height. Holding it in front of me meant the spider webs got broken up before I did it with my face.

Well, that's smart!! With my luck, I'd trip and impale myself LOL

The branches at the end were very light. A couple of times they got snagged in the vegetation and I thought they were going to break apart. You'd have a hard time hurting yourself with the stick I was using - truth be told I could probably have hit someone with it and not done them any damage to speak of.

On the way up I encountered quite a lot of the little spiders. I don't usually see them on the way up. Usually when I spot one I just find a piece of stick and throw it through the web.

Back to running. I took a few days off with some kind of illness so I walked rather than ran. This week I've been easing back into running so hopefully I can still hit my running goals for the month. I've got 15 miles in so far and would really like to get to 60 by the end of the month.

It's still pretty warm out there but the humidity is a little more forgiving. I can tell the difference when looking at my times and performance metrics.

Today is so much cooler outside this morning! I'm waiting for my neighbor to wake up and see if she wants to walk.

I was hoping to show her the trails I hike on at the local county park. I have a favorite route that I like to take and not many people go there.
