There's an adage Confession is good for the soul. It is not meant to be about the sacrament of confession (also known as reconciliation). It is meant to be about the psychology of unburdening one's self of guilt and shame for having done wrong. It can apply to the sacrament but it is meant to be general rather than religious.
In some faith traditions there is no significant provision for unburdening one's self of guilt and shame for having done wrong. Prayer (often silent) to God for forgiveness is the main (or only) provision that is given theological approval in those traditions. If you are feeling guilty and ashamed for the things you've done what do you do to expiate those feelings?
