There's an adage Confession is good for the soul. It is not meant to be about the sacrament of confession (also known as reconciliation). It is meant to be about the psychology of unburdening one's self of guilt and shame for having done wrong. It can apply to the sacrament but it is meant to be general rather than religious.

In some faith traditions there is no significant provision for unburdening one's self of guilt and shame for having done wrong. Prayer (often silent) to God for forgiveness is the main (or only) provision that is given theological approval in those traditions. If you are feeling guilty and ashamed for the things you've done what do you do to expiate those feelings?

I confess it as sin to God and ask Him to forgive me and sometimes I confess my sins to someone from church.

Confessional confessions only gain pastoral advantages for corruption.

How does a pastor gain advantage?

If one confesses "Father forgive me for I have sinned most grievously in the matter of envy." what profit is in it for the pastor who listens advises and assures of God's absolving forgiveness?

We have to confess our sins to one another so they can pray and you get healed up (James). Most of the time you go to a pastor because the others are so immature they'll only gossip about you or come with some stupid advice that you need to see a psychologist. If you cant even tell your pastor because he's too immature too I change churches.

Jesus gave the authority to the apostles to forgive. He gives authority to His Church to forgive. The big connection is that it's the forgiveness that Jesus died on the cross for that is actually given.

In private confession a pastor vows to not share details.

Have you read When he had said this, he breathed on them. And he said to them: "Receive the Holy Spirit. Those whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them, and those whose sins you shall retain, they are retained."
John 20:22-23 These things are written for our profit.

So I can forgive your sins committed against someone else? I think not

I'm much in favor of confession and also forgiveness. It's good for the soul.... it''s good for our relationships (with God and others).

Yup just not youir interpretation of it

I quoted the passage. I didn't offer an interpretation. It really does say When he had said this, he breathed on them. And he said to them: "Receive the Holy Spirit. Those whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them, and those whose sins you shall retain, they are retained."

If they can be retained then it is personal, not other peoples

Really, He is talking to more than one and the other is it only one person who sins against you in a lifetime or is it many?

That is the only text of which I think: that was for the apostles. It may be for some leaders, but I don't think many are on that level. If someone has unforgiveness it doesn't mean someone else's sins are not forgiven. I think that text from James, confess each other your sins and pray for each other, is better for this.

There are two other passages one in Matthew chapter sixteen and the other in Matthew chapter 18
