Chromebook revisited

I considered buying a Chromebook about 8 months ago. I am considering it again. The model I am looking at is an Acer Chomebook 15 it looks like this

Just got an HP laptop for under 200 and it seems to work fine, has 4 GB RAM and 34 GB of emory

The difficulty with Chromebooks is the apps. I am a computer power user, and I run things like LaTeX (yes, there's OverLeaf, but it's still not as good as a natively-running version), and full office suite (either MS Office or LibreOffice), that you simply can't run on a Chromebook. Sure, it'll browse the web, do email, play Netflix, etc. But it simply won't work like a regular laptop. It doesn't suit me, but it might well suit others.

If full sized applications are needed then installing Linux or Windows is easy and if you replace the 16 GB m.2 ssd with a 128 GB one (costs about $50 or less) you'll have enough space for Office. The laptop will accept external HDDs and SSDs too.

Oh that sounds good. My son wants one. Not gonna buy a second hand thing anymore. Some new ones are the same price. Wondered if they were good.

I recommend the Lenovo ThinkPad 11e. My wife has one, and my work bought me one at my request. They're built like tanks. It's kind of the Chromebook idea in some ways - very portable, small size, well-built. But it runs a serious OS: Windows 10 Professional (Home versions of Windows are worth NOT getting). I can do everything on it I need except for heavy-duty LabVIEW programming. We're both very happy with our laptops.

My buying stuff goes much quicker. I always do everything on impulses. Our national site and tv program Chooseneatly that checks things said this was a good one and it was cheap and my son really wanted one now please. No idea what kind of stuff is in it but they said it was good, so it must be.

Glad we didn't wait yesterday. It turned out he came today, although track and trace said yesterday. That always takes days if they bring it to the post office. He's so happy with it. Beautiful thing, looks better than a normal laptop and the screen is big enough. It's silver. For the rest don't ask me about gigabite stuff lol.
