The one and only time in my life that I walked out of church during the sermon was for that precise reason. It was in the runup to the 2012 election between Romney and Obama and the preacher took several cheap jabs at one of the candidates. Since they were a guest preacher I was looking forward to a different perspective on things but lasted less than five minutes before saying to my wife "this is cr*p" and walking out. The candidate the preacher was mocking wasn't the candidate I'd have supported (I was visiting the US, so I don't get a vote anyway) but if I want a political discussion I'll go to the bar - if I sit through a sermon I want a theological message.

Right. Verse 12 seems to imply that he was taken in the chariot.

How do you get from "and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven" to implying he was taken in the chariot?

I can see that, I just don't see how you get from the explicit statement that Elijah went up in the whirlwind to the implication he went up in the chariot.

In the context of distractions trying to get Elisha to take his eyes off Elijah it seems to me the most obvious explanation is that the fiery chariot was the final distraction rather than the final transportation. If there is a solid alternative explanation I'd be curious to see it, I'm just not seeing anything to support the idea that Elijah went up in the chariot especially when the text is apparently so clear about the whirlwind.
