Matthew 5:11-12 11 Blessed are you when they have slandered you, and persecuted you, and spoken all kinds of evil against you, falsely, for my sake: 12 be glad and exult, for your reward in heaven is plentiful. For so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
It's not so easy to know when this blessing applies; is it about people abusing you because of your religion? Is it about people mistreating you because of your religion? Is it only genuine persecution when people physically assault you even as far as attempting to kill you or is a lesser kind of brutality be it physical or verbal also in mind.
When I have had discussions with Jehovah's witnesses some have told of persecution that they've endured; for them the persecution is family or friends cutting them off or people slamming the door in their face or doing mean spirited things to them or their property. Would that qualify as persecution?
Or is it the secular government refusing to allow its state funded and owned property to be used for overtly Christian religious meetings and practises - such as school prayer?
It seems like a hard to pin down concept to me.
