Perhaps the meaning is that a person should not simmer with resentment, etc. even if he isn't contemplating any kind of "getting even" with the person who brought it about.Ephesians 4:26-27 says:
Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and do not give the devil [s]an opportunity.
In what ways can we be angry, but not sin?
Sin is self-centeredness. Therefore, when we oppose some action or idea 100% to honor God with no selfish motives at all, that's when Paul's description is fulfilled. But it requires the command because we are seldom righteously angry.Ephesians 4:26-27 says:
