    If alcohol never existed

Do you mean if ethanol never existed at all, or if drinks containing ethanol never existed? If the former, are you restricting the discussion to ethanol or would other alcohols need to be eliminated as well?

    World Liz Truss resigns

Essentially she stood on a pro-growth platform. Her chancellor (finance minister) proposed a mini-budget intended to boost growth but the global markets hated it, with the result that the yields on government bonds (gilts) started to spike as the market believed it would destabilise the economy...

    Pay before you pump?

Sure, although I've never seen anything other than an option to enter a rewards cards at any gas station in any of the places I've been. That doesn't mean they aren't out there - you've obviously seen them and been annoyed by them - but I've never seen them anywhere I've travelled. Unless a...

    Pay before you pump?

My credit card gives me 3% cash back at gas stations, which is worth more than 5c/gallon. Most places near me either offer no discount for cash or it's maybe 3c/gallon. Or I can take 12c/gallon cash back from my card. Let me think about that one.... The only time I've needed to enter a zip code...

    Pay before you pump?

Chances are you don't, you either take a best guess or overestimate and get your change when you're done. You just have to decide whether you'd prefer to put a fixed amount in and accept you may not completely fill the tank, or have to go back in to get your change once you're full.

Large Statistical Excess Deaths, Europe and UK

Sometimes it's hard to know just what to make of all the numbers. When deaths are higher among the vaccinated population than among the unvaccinated it doesn't necessarily mean the vaccine is dangerous, it can mean that the vaccinated population is substantially larger than the unvaccinated and...

Why is this diversity not worrying Christians?

There's a big difference when the person who pays the price does so voluntarily. At a simplistic human level imagine you did something wrong, went to court and were issued a fine. Now you have to pay some amount of money for your transgression. But you don't have the money. Never mind, you can...

    A stomachache

Interesting - I think my friend said she takes 75mcg. I'd have thought the difference in dosage would have been much bigger than that, if you had yours removed completely. I remember she said something about wanting to reduce her dosage but I'm not sure if she wanted to cut it to 50 or 25mcg.

    Prison

Yes, to the extent that the fear of punishment actually deters the crime. I'm not sure how it provides much reassurance and protection, to know that someone who does something incredibly bad will be locked up after the fact. It doesn't do much to help the victim and I'm not always sure how it...

    A stomachache

Do you mind me asking how much Levothyroxine you take? A friend of mine takes it because she has an underactive thyroid, although nothing like what you've described in other posts here.

    Prison

I would agree that it isn't a false sense of security for the law-abiding, although a lot would depend on the exact circumstances. The person who just goes and kills someone, apparently at random, is the sort of person it is rational to be concerned about. The person who planned and executed a...

What do (all) religions have in common?

A lot would depend on how you define a religion. In general I'd say they share a common belief in some kind of deity or deities, although if atheism is defined as a religion that breaks. If we exclude atheism then generally religions look to make their adherents better in some way, whether...

    In your opinion,

Ordinarily I would agree with Fritz that a human right is something that pre-exists and does not inherently require someone else to pay for. But with the relentless push to take away services in any format other than online, a lack of internet access naturally excludes people from the most basic...

    What do you do

I think I'd have to go with Strav on this one. If something is a clearly determinable matter of fact you can even look it up on Google. If it's a matter of opinion, or the kind of issue where the reality is not as simple as one is right and the other is wrong, it sounds like something they need...

    Prison

I think in general what governments do best is propose solutions to problems they created, and act as if there is no other solution that doesn't involve the government getting involved and taking more control. Then when their newfangled approach invariably fails (as it usually must, given it was...

Have you read any of the holy books of other religions? If not, do you intend to?

Back to the original topic, I read a small part of the Book of Mormon and have my own copy of the Qu'ran, although haven't read a whole lot of it and remember little of what I read in it. In a past life I kept coming across Muslims asking questions, and it seemed prudent to at least know...
