Can I ask you another question about coffee (the drink)?

Added Adding a "subscribed threads" tab to the navigation bar

Is there a way to do this as opposed to navigating through the "quick links" tab? It just seems an unnecessary extra step. Thanks! :)

Can those called to serve forgive sins?

"Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." (Jas. 5:16). King Jimmy always says that so well :)

Can those called to serve forgive sins?

You've just stated that the Pastor can give you forgiveness, and that he can't, but I'll leave that alone for now. When a person states "In His (Jesus) stead, I forgive you your sins", that is the Pastor giving HIS OWN forgiveness. How is that hard? *(Do you see what you've started George...

Can those called to serve forgive sins?

Again, the Minister is only making a pronouncement of what has already been decided. He is not doing it of his own accord or judgement, but under the direction of the Judge.

Can those called to serve forgive sins?

Okay, can you give me a modern example of where a minister of Christ has clearly "retained" a person's sin? If the (metaphorical) Judge has not forgiven an offense, then the (metaphorical) warden has the duty to follow that order. He does not, of himself, refuse the order. Your point also...

Starbucks with an iced coffee debating the minutia of life.

Can those called to serve forgive sins?

No. Because the Pastor does not have the authority. He can assure us of forgiveness/pardon, because Christ has declared it in his word (just as the warden can declare the pardon of the Judge), but he cannot extend what has not been given to him (previous mention of scripture in the thread aside...

Can those called to serve forgive sins?

Right. So the Warden pronouncing "I give you freedom" is a lie. The King has given the freedom, hence "The King has freed you" would be correct.

Can those called to serve forgive sins?

"Getting forgiven" by the Pastor/Priest has everything to do with the Pastor/Priest. Subsequently we can't say it doesn't. Assuring one of the forgiveness of Christ bypasses the Pastor/Priest and re-focuses our vision on Christ who is the only one to forgive.

Can those called to serve forgive sins?

However, it is still under the authority of the Warden, the one with the keys has not freed them from anything. He is merely announcing what the Warden has done.

Can those called to serve forgive sins?

There is a vast difference between what you've said here, and the Pastor/Priest explicitly forgiving sins, unless I missed something. I agree with your post wholeheartedly.

Can those called to serve forgive sins?

Ah, but it is - else there would be no need for the Pastor/Priest to extend forgiveness, but to focus our vision on the One who can forgive.
  17. ImaginaryDay2

Can those called to serve forgive sins?

No. In the Presbyterian church I attended, part of the service was silent prayer/confession of sins, followed by an 'Assurance of Pardon'. The Pastor would assure the congregation of their forgiveness in Christ, but would not, himself, extend forgiveness or pardon. This is a position we all...

    What is sin?

I appreciate this explanation, as it goes far beyond the idea of merely having a "sin nature". Somehow that idea suggests that there is an age (never stated) where sin enters into our life, where we become aware of it, or it gains a foothold. Prior to that, there is some presumption of...
