    Well in a tub setting, if the water hits it then it gets mildew/mold faster in the little divots so it's better to have a perfectly smooth bead.

    I'm pretty good at caulking. I watched a guy do it years ago and the trick is to have some wet rags handy and use your wettened finger to smooth out the caulk, which also presses it into the opening more. Then you wipe it on the wet rag. Keeping the finger moist is what keeps the caulk smooth...
