In all seriousness, take up music (if you don't already, I don't know). Just playing it helps to improve spacial reasoning. Composing it involves a mixture of math based logic (for horizontal (time) relationships and vertical (harmony) relationships) and creativity within given frameworks. But don't do it just to be "smart" - do it because it's fun and you love it.

Hmmmmm mathematics or music, what will it be?
Math is so much fun, but I'll go for the music.
Yeehaw! Music makes me intelligent! I like listening to music. Any kind of music?

I had that in high school...

Well, then a calculus-based physics course at the university level would be a perfect place to continue. :) Physics really came alive when Newton came along. Once you've had about 4 semesters of calculus/physics, you can really begin to figure out how a lot of things work. Courses in differential equations are especially useful for the physical sciences.

Ha!
I did pass one exam on the university in math and it was a very difficult one, a lot had to do it over and over. That was before they kicked me off university saying I was too stupid for it. Can you believe it? Lol. But serious, Stravinsk is right about music. Do you know how I pumped all that nonsense in my brain and was somehow able to blur it out with an exam? (only used my short term memory btw, I know nothing about it anymore) Fats Domino. I studied physical geography for a year. I pumped all the information in my head with Fats Domino singing loud on my walkman.

Well, if you are approaching it as something to memorize and shortly thereafter regurgitate simply to pass an exam, then you aren't really learning anything (this is how pre-med students approach the 1 "weed-out" calculus course they are required to take). It isn't about memorizing formulas, it's about actually understanding how the formulas are derived and the motivation behind seeking them. This is where the "ah-ha" moments come from. ;)

So Mark, you really sound like you have this stuff down. Answer me a few simple questions?

1. Does the earth rotate one full turn every 24 hours? A little less/more? Hey - I know this is the basics I was taught in school (kinder I think)...just wanted to clarify with a master. Yes or no with deviation if any, thanks.

Follow up question once you have answered.

Hmmm, well, I can memorize all the lyrics now. The Blues Brothers, also great background music to pump books in your head. We're so glad to see so many of you wonderful people here tonight and we would especially like to welcome all the representatives of Illinois law enforcement community. We do sincerely hope you all enjoy the show and remember people that no matter who you are or what you do to live, strive and survive, there are still some things that make us all the same, you, me, them, everybody, everybody.
Hey I should start a 'guess a song or not' thread.

Well Mark isn't apparently going to answer my question, but I'll give him a chance to answer the follow up :

If Earth rotates on it's axis once in a 24 hour period...(obviously putting it to the same position after 24 hours)

And it's 12 midnight in the Winter Solstice at a given location (so the position is facing away from the Sun)

In 6 months time, the Earth will now be on the other side of the Sun

And it will still be 12 midnight, or very close to, given daylight savings time (give or take an hour) - only this time - the position will be facing the Sun.

Except that it isn't. Every 6 months here in Australia I do not need to change my clock by 12 hours.

Got an answer for this problem?

I bet Mark is listening to the Blues Brothers now to come up with a good answer. No I think he went to bed. Oh my, it's 7 o'clock in the morning over there now. I predict that any minute now Bill will post good morning. How late is it in Australia now?

It's almost 11am. Edit: 11pm. Oh the irony of getting that wrong in the context of this conversation, lol.

And there is no good answer that fits the model without any pseudo science crap and throwing a bunch of equations at people to confuse them into believing things that aren't true. Can't have it both ways - in order for one to be on the other side of the Sun and still the same time (or an hour difference for daylight savings time) 6 months later (and be facing the opposite direction as is necessary for the time to be real) - then the earth can't be completing a rotation once every 24 hours.

Edit: You didn't like my fluffyonacid video? I'm hurt! :xD:

Ha! I hadn't watched it yet. I'm at the office, they'll look weird at me if I listen to pink fluffy unicorns I'm afraid, but now I'm having a break. Lol you made that yourself? Love it!

11 am? It's 1.20 pm here now. I thought it would be 12 hours time difference. It's a flat earth after all.

Strange how a block nose moves from one sinus to another and there are correlating effects on how the brain works. A block nose, a blocked mind. Watch out for the squeezes ;-)

Yeah, the sun was coming up, so I went to bed. I simply didn't feel like trying to explain the difference between a solar and sidereal day, when I know it would be refused anyway.

One can stimulate one's logic neuron by imaging a spherical Earth, a spherical Moon, and a spherical Sun in space separated from where you are right now by 0 miles, 250,000 miles, and 93,000,000 miles respectively. :)

It was 11 pm. Here it's 10 pm now. 17 hours difference? Pffff I'll never become a mathematician. I did learn my kids the multiplication tables. They don't do that anymore in school nowadays. Stupid.

It was a logical argument neurone. I think it's most logical to conclude it's impossible to prove the earth is round or we should all just go to space. Would be a nice ch trip.

Cool, so I looked into it and based on a 30 day month, it works out to exactly 12 hours. 4min a Day * 30 * 6 = 720 720/60 = 12 hours.

The math works out, but our eyes still tell us that the earth orbiting the sun is a lie. You can go outside and clock the movements of the sun, or watch numerous time lapse videos (such as I have posted in the NASA/Facebook thread in the news section) and the Sun grows larger as it nears and shrinks as it retreats.

That is what our eyes tell us - but completely conflicts with the Heliocentric model - because a sun 93 million miles away will not appear to shrink or grow - only a local sun will do that.

It also conflicts (the model, that is) with numerous other evidences (also posted in that thread) such as hot spots directly under the sun taken from high altitude balloons.
