I bought 5 Kg of Basmati rice in a nice zip closed cloth bad. It comes from Pakistan. It is also grown in India. It has very long grains that expand in length when cooked in water making a very fluffy and rather tasty rice for savoury foods and rice salads. I imagine it might work for some sweets too, though I have not tried it yet.

Basmati rice tastes the best, that is, if you can cook it.

So far I've done well with it. Easy to cook. :)

It's really tasty. Somehow I can't even cook what they call magic rice here, which is for the most stupid cooks and the most easy of all, it still gets either too raw or one fluffy ball.

I've moved this thread to the Food & Drink forum :D

I love Basmati rice!

Have you tried Jasmine rice yet? Shorter and thicker grains but still wonderful for Asian inspired dishes!

I intended to be all scientific in this thread and discuss the genetics of Basmati rice and the regions in which it is grown and its nutritional value! :p

Basmati is very nice, along with Jasmine. There are some good South Asian (Indian) and Thai restaurants close-by here that use Basmati rice. very aromatic. Grocery stores close to here sell the same size bags for very cheap.

Do you eat it plain or do you put something on it?

I always cook something with it. Onions, corn & peas, Bacon & tomatoes, something with flavour and I usually add spices to it. I also use it with sauces like Satay sauce & chicken. It is good rice :)

Tonight's cooking is a little red lentils, some split yellow peas, some pearl barley, some split green peas, some pepper, some bacon, some paprika, some chilli powder, and some tomatoes all in one pot slowly simmering until they are legumes are soft and/or falling apart and the bacon is nicely infused all through the mix :)

No Basmati rice tonight ..

My mom made Basmati rice. She learned that from me.
Instant Basmati rice, put it one minute in the microwave.
