Jesus said these things, and then, lifting up his eyes toward heaven, he said: "Father, the hour has arrived: glorify your Son, so that your Son may glorify you, just as you have given authority over all flesh to him, so that he may give eternal life to all those whom you have given to him. And this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. [John 17:1-3]

What does And this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. mean?

That is eternal life. If you know Him you become like Him and He is Life. If they had eaten the fruit of the tree of Life I think they would have known Him and become like Him. That was a sour apple.
Know is also that you become one. If you know evil that means you come into communion with the devil, by sinning yourself or in God's case experience him because he rebelled against Him.

A chap told me - a while back - that it means that learning about God and Jesus is what eternal life is. I think he may have been thinking that if you know a whole lot about God and Jesus you get to have eternal life. It seemed like one would need to pass an exam to gain eternal life.

The wording in the passage includes knowing. (And this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent). Many view this as knowing a person in friendship, thus knowing the only True God and Jesus Christ whom God had sent implies friendship with God and Jesus. The idea may include a familial relationship - being sons and daughters of God. There is also the interesting apparent distinction between God and Jesus Christ but that is a theological discussion for another thread.

"Knowing" is scripture is up close and personal, where God is your personal best friend.

Not always. Knowing can be about knowing the law, knowing the matter, knowing the truth.
