If you believe - as many do - that God's purposes are set and settled according to both his public decree and his secret decree why do the faithful pray since it appears that prayer cannot and does not change anything?

But yet it does does it not? Prayer is done for many reasons, to ask something from God, to get answers, to ask for healing, for strength, for so many reasons and yes God can change His mind or delay things. We see that in the Old Testament in particular.

God encourages us to pray and we hope that our prayers are in line with His will. Luke 18:1 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; That verse is about the persistent widow.

Do you not also hope that when you pray God will change the events and perils that you and those whom you know or love face?

Prayer, to me is for the remembering of GOD and that holy direction. In other words; it keeps the right action close at hand or in mind rather, keep8ng one in the mindset of doing what is right in all cases.

Prayer is for us to know and abide by the will of GOD, not for GOD to change that will.

Opinion I suppose

Peace

Only if that is according to His will and not me trying to manipulate God's will. God encourages us to continually seek Him out in prayer. I think of when Abraham pleaded to God in the Old Testament to save Sodom...it wasn't Abraham twisting God to do what he wanted, but God remained God, ever just, and kept encouraging Abraham to pray. In the New Testament there was the woman speaking to Jesus and He was encouraging her as well since He didn't just walk away from her but she showed faith by talking about how the dogs get table scraps. Jesus could have turned and left her at any point, but He waited. God always encourages us to pray. He doesn't turn away from us but hopes we seek His will and are in line with it.

Our prayers might even change for the same person as we see when time goes by how God is working in that person's life. That's showing that we're seeing God's will and we pray accordingly.

Prayer is a personal conversation with God, and it is powerful in converting, convicting, inspiring you to be transformed, plus the added benefit of see His hand working in your life and in the lives of those you pray for. It is real..It is awesome... It is powerful... and it keeps your relationship with Him real.

Because He tells us to. Even Jesus prayed. We have to pray that His will be done on earth.

I like to talk to God and to be silent to listen to him. He speaks in the silence. Not with audible words, that would be a shock. God speaks in people, situations, the things that exist, in dreams, in ideas, in visions. Sometimes he speaks by means of others, like the prophets of old only not with new revelations intended to be normative but rather with visions and words of encouragement given to this or that member of the body for the benefit of all who hear and take the message to heart.

While it is true what you said, He does speak audibly too. You are right it would be a shock, but sometimes people need to shock of up close and personal to walk them up.

Years ago in a church I attended they recorded the singing and preaching and when they listened to the tape you heard angels singing through it.

Yes I have heard a tape like that but of course there is no faith if you have a tape.

Because audible things are (generally speaking) recordable things.

God would not fall for it, the best laid plans of mice and men. Besides even if such a recording existed, it would not be proof in your eyes, because you do not want to believe. It would be like Nebuchadnezzar, it would drive you mad in your denial.

It's not an attempt to deceive God - that would be a very silly thing to attempt - it is like recording what is said in the holy scriptures except this is using a recording device instead of a human being to hear and then write.
