Do you think public schools should have a dress code? What about uniforms?

Personally I think so but I am old and think that some of the dress today is way out of line for school or for that matter much of anywhere else

No expert here; but I think a uniform does add a serious tone to study life, which is what youngsters are pursuing.

There is a sense in which so many are likely to wear jeans and t-shirt anyway, which is a sort of 'uniform' in itself.

Dont have a problem with that but pajamas which I see quite often in the store is way out of line and of course those who dress in a way that is not age appropriate

I think most countries have uniforms. I think this is a good idea.

AT LEAST dress codes are necessary.... SOME standard is necessary since kids often don't know how to dress themselves or what is appropriate (and some parents don't either).... IF there are no uniforms, I'd be rather permissive but SOME guidelines are - unfortunately - needed for those few who just don't have a clue.

I hated wearing a uniform when I was at school but it does serve multiple purposes.

It means that if you have a group of kids causing trouble it's easy to identify where they came from. It's a great equalizer, you don't get a situation where the poor kids stand out because they aren't wearing the latest designer names. It enforces some standards of decency. It makes it clear that school is a place of study rather than merely an extension of the park.

Every once in a while my school had non-uniform days and I remember feeling much freer in my own choice of clothing, and also much less inclined to knuckle down and study.

I think uniforms are a great idea, and for the reasons [unm]tango[/unm] cited. If uniforms aren't used, but a dress code is used instead, there should be rules regarding cleanliness (would apply to uniforms as well), modesty and vulgarity of logos, etc.

Dutch national uniform, also at the office when you're 46 LOL.
I think it's great if everyone wears denim with uggs lol. Tbh I rarely notice what someone wears except when it's something like a suit or a dress. If you want noone to notice you wear denim and a t-shirt.
Aww there was a 16 year old girl from England on another forum. Poor thing. She went to a party and they put alcohol in her drink and she ended up kissing a boy and now her controlling mother put her on such a stupid school with uniforms. Poor thing. She even had to wear it at home and those terrible long dresses her mom makes herself. My mom was raised Dutch reformed. Her friends had to dress like that. Rules rules rules. As soon as they were 18 and could leave the house they never wore dresses anymore. Hmm maybe that's why denim is the national uniform. Don't stand out or everyone will look weird at you. Just look like a clone.

I was homeschooled, K-8 and sorta in high school. My mom was my homeschool teacher. No uniform, but I had a entirely self-imposed dress code: I wore pants (shorts always - no matter the weather). No shirt, no shoes. Mom never said a word that I recall. That was my usual attire back in those days (influence of a beach town, probably). For schools, I'd suggest a much more extensive dress code - or better yet, uniforms.

Here is the dress code for Laguna Beach Unified School District (California):

Students are to dress in appropriate clothing and safe footwear, which allows them to participate in school activities. Clothing or fads that cause class disruption may be restricted at the discretion of the administration (e.g., unusually distracting hairstyles, tattoos, and body piercings that cause a safety concern for regular school activities).

The following guidelines shall apply to all regular school activities:

Shoes must be worn at all times. Footwear must be safe, practical, and not limit student participation in school activities.

Clothing, jewelry, and personal items (e.g., shirts, backpacks, gym bags, water bottles) must be free of writing, pictures or any other insignia that are crude, vulgar, profane, or sexually suggestive, or which bear drug, alcohol, tobacco or weapons advertising, promotions and likenesses, or which advocate racial, ethnic or religious prejudice. Any clothing that promotes gang activity or affiliation is also prohibited.

Clothes must be sufficient to conceal undergarments at all times. “Spaghetti” straps are not permitted, and top straps must be one - inch wide. See - through or fishnet fabrics, halter tops, off - the - shoulder or low - cut tops, bare midriffs, short skirts or short - shorts may be restricted at the discretion of the administration.

Hats and sweatshirt hoods may not be worn indoors.

Nothin' about boys needing to wear shirts, but I think that's a given.

The above seems reasonable to ME. Probably. But again, I think uniforms are the way to go.

A lot of dress codes are aimed toward girls' attire.
