Hi, MarkFL! :) Getting earring(s) put in is still a time honored rite of passage at around 18, right?
(Kind of an even more benign alternative to the first tattoo at 18.)

I had my left ear pierced on my 21st birthday. I never got a tattoo (I almost got one while in the Navy), because while you might think something is cool when you are young, I figured decades later it might not be so cool. ;)

Yes, well it was certainly like a trend to mark adulthood; although these days I reckon it's even more widespread among guys at 18, and they often do both ears now. (For women, 2 each side is almost the default 'setting' for earrings now.) Among young male waiters, earrings are seemingly almost 'obligatory', right?

Re. tattoos, it used to be very much a man thing (military men, bikers, etc.) but now in North America even more women than men use the parlor, apparently; 59%-70% of parlor clients are female; among military personnel, an even higher proportion of females get tattoos than men do; and among military wives it's a really widespread practice, often gotten in faith, patriotic and/or family themes: on the surface a bit radical/edgy but in actual fact very much a mainstream expression of conservative values, really, it seems.

Pretty well, Sir! :)

It used to be a kind of edgy fashion thing, I think, for guys, but now a lot of basically serious and conservative young men have it done also; it's become so widespread and mainstream, I think, right?

PS: So does it still fit in? :)

The last time I wore one was in 2008 when Van Halen came to town (I have a custom made earring with their logo). As far as I know the hole is still open. It had been many years before that since I had worn one, and it went right in.

So it probably would still fit! :)

Kind of emphasizes that if a guy is considering doing it, even if not intending to wear it, doing it can be worthwhile, to be able to wear it even occasionally, I guess...

I was 14 when I got my ears pierced. I am allergic to most metals so I rarely wear any jewelry.

Yes but I had two on each side in art school but my skin can't handle metals so I don't wear earrings except for maybe once a year for a few hours. Then my ears swell up so much it looks bad!! And feels worse. I only have the ones on the bottom now, the other ones closed up.

Have you tried hypoallergenic earrings? (if I got the spelling right!)

Yes, the time came when having at least 2 in each lobe began to be regarded as the 'default' standard, rather than 1 each side. Nowadays, 2 studs each side, is still regarded as conservative, aren't they?

I've tried all kinds of metal. I have really sensitive skin.

If you considered gauging the hole just a bit (not big!), maybe to a 16 or 14 instead of the usual 18 or 20, you could either maybe wear acryllic or wooden earrings or even tiny metal rings that would only dangle very loosely through the hole. Depends if you'd be prepared to enlarge the holes just a teeny bit with a taper, maybe.

I have a custom made earring
PS:
MarkFL:

You must have been quite serious and dedicated to it to have had a custom made one. (Most ppl buy them "off the hook"...)
