Yes, they start chirping really loud when they hear the birds outside. Then they fly past the window so the birds will see them, too.

My condolences on the loss of your friend! Cycling, even in coordinated races can be so dangerous. I used to love to cycle but now just do it in my basement so I know I'm safe.
