Somewhere there is a line between "curious" and "stalker" :)

That's not a line I've crossed. See video by DarkMatter2525 in the "what's the difference between lurking and stalking" thread. What that guy did is stalking and obvious harassment. Those labels were applied to me on peanuts. And I can't imagine that every one who has accused another is not also guilty of using a search engine to investigate. Hypocrisy.

Bloody heck. I found out one Admin's name because SHE LINKED ONE OF HER WEBSITES IN HER OWN PROFILE. Stalking? Pfff. Give me a break. The link was there to be investigated - placed there BY HER - for anyone who was curious.

Any info a person has provided publicly, if found, cannot be said to be "stalking". If simply finding and being able to link a person with an account is "stalking" - then every single one of the accounts I had on the other board that were discovered were discovered by "stalkers".

I am glad there are those who do recognize my awesomeness. By default, this also means they must be awesome. :tea:

How do you feel about having your photo posted publicly in your profile such as on a message board?

When I was on staff elsewhere, I was treated absolutely horribly by members...until I added my photo as my avatar. After that members seemed to consider me human again and treated me more kindly.

We are sometimes effected for life by things that happen to us......

I've been WAY too active on the 'net since I was 9 or 10. While my parents were good about watching me for naughty sites (which they didn't need to do), they were totally uninvolved otherwise (where they NEEDED to). I was very innocent and naieve .... and surprisingly good. And so I can understand why my trusted me and thought I was okay. They should not have trusted OTHERS and they trusted MY wisdom and knowledge FAR too little. That's all I want to say there.

On sites, I gave out my full name..... town in which I live.... personal information..... pictures...... all because I was stupid, nieve, good. And I didn't realize how EASY it is to find people, to find where people live, to get phone numbers and addresses, to HARASS people YEARS later. Girls..... paedophiles.... they were the worst. But sometimes, just people who wanted to KNOW me or be personal with me.

My online experience has had TWO horrible, very hurtful experiences for me: How Admins at CF stab (bed) me.... and how people USED info to abused me. Both hurt a lot. Both especially because I was trusting, nieve, innocent. I chuck it up to "tuition" that life charges for hard lessons.

I've become a less trusting, more guarded person.

I don't have a facebook page. I NEVER get out a picture or anything personal unless I PERSONALLY, face-to-face, know them WELL. I will not give you my phone number, address or any means you can aquire them. I will not give you names you can trick into giving you information. I give an email address only because it's usually REQUIRED to register for websites, etc. but I should not do that.

Steady tiger, I never said it was a line you crossed, I just couldn't help notice you post an awful lot about how easy it is to track people down. It doesn't take an INTJ type to click a link someone posted and then use WHOIS to get an address from it.

If I feel there is a need to track someone down, I don't need to use WHOIS. Besides, that only assumes it was registered with and maintained by a personal and traceable IP.

I also have not misused any sensitive information I have found. Nor passed it on. Do you realize that over on the other board there is a feature now that erases exif data from links that have pictures? Do you know why?

*I* am the reason why. And not because I abused it - I have not. A long time ago someone sent me a photo that had exif data in it. This person took it with their phone, and it could be traced to a specific location. Out of curiosity, I looked it up. I also told this person I looked it up, but I have NEVER shared that information with ANYONE - nor have I made any phone calls or traveled to said location (which isn't even in my country). I also told this person I would help her erase that data when a way became known to me - because at the time I did not know (but I do now). She said she wasn't concerned about it.

But that wasn't what she told other people, especially some yahoo white knights that are so desperate to find love online and boost their "status" among females that they will readily use and abuse any kind of info they can to smack down competition.

Later, even though I assured this person AGAIN privately that her information was not shared - she continued to insinuate and turn people against me - mostly men who were interested in her, and a certain circle of people because she wanted the attention. Easy for her to do when my rep wasn't great to begin with - and it suited her princess complex - and she could also get away with it because she was physically attractive.

After yet another young and attractive female started an account and posted a picture of her BEDROOM - that could be traced because the photo had exif data embedded in it - The Administration of the board was informed (by yours truly) that people were publicly sharing photos that had exif data that could be linked to specific locations. They were told because I didn't want ANYONE ELSE using that information against any net noobs, especially naive females.

This is history you probably didn't know, but know now. And no, it is generally not easy to track someone down. I know many people from the other place because I have been a member there for a very long time (er - a member and a banned member for much of it). One could assume I was banned for serious things. I was not. People get banned there all the time because of spite reporting, clans that abuse the report feature, and the rules of the site itself - that is so so easy to break. Not to mention favoritism. Say "omg" and you're a not liked person and get an infraction - but say it and your a known and popular poster and chances are it won't be actioned. Yep, favoritism on a webboard - great witness for Xianity.

All this talk has reminded me that there are some people I need to block soon. A whole bunch of people actually.

Steady dude, I'll say it again - I never said you were a stalker. I just noticed how much you post about such things and issues that are in the past.

I've come across a few sites that strip EXIF data, sometimes to the point it becomes a problem. Sometimes it's done to protect the privacy of people who don't think before they post, other times it presumably has other reasons. My photos have copyright information in the EXIF and frankly I don't want anyone stripping them out - as far as I'm concerned they have no right to remove my copyright notices.

If you get caught up in silly internet fights after trying to help someone there's probably a lesson in there somewhere. How does it look, from the perspective of a woman, to have some guy tell her that he knows exactly where she lives? Whatever your intentions are (and I have no reason to assume they are anything other than 100% honorable), it's easy to see how that would spook people. You promise you won't use the information or post the information or do anything with it at all, but from her perspective some online guy just got really creepy because he found out where she lives, using a technology she doesn't understand (because if she did understand it she wouldn't have posted it). And then, as you say, the online knights ride to her rescue and vanquish the nasty dark knight in a tidal wave of fine sounding rhetoric. Many of them were probably jealous because they wish they knew where she lived. As the saying goes, no good deed goes unpunished.

Depending on what people post it can be remarkably easy to track them. On another forum (not CF) I was talking to a guy about piecing bits and pieces of information together and he wondered what his footprint looked like. At that time I had his real name and state, and that was it. He was quite surprised when I traced his full postal address. That one was easy, it just took me a few minutes on Google.

I've been a moderator/administrator on other boards and have deleted a few pictures people posted, apparently unaware of what they contained. Usually I've just dropped the poster a note explaining why I deleted it and that they were welcome to repost it but they'd probably want to crop it first. One lady was excited at the prospect of becoming a grandmother and posted her daughter's pregnancy scan, complete with daughter's full name across the top (she subsequently reposted with the name removed).

It's just one of the downsides of trying to help. Truth be told I'm not hugely familiar with CF, I was a member for some years (still have an account but couldn't tell you when I last logged in) but found the rules too stifling. When any given user is barred from most of the board something is wrong, and given how much of the board was denomination specific, age specific, life stage specific etc, frankly it got too tedious endlessly trying to figure if I was allowed to post in any given area. Needless to say the New Posts lists was all but useless.

My kids want to make youtube movies but their dad says it's too dangerous. Why? they ask me. 'Because dad says so.' These days you have to watch out with everything.

It's too early in the morning and my eyes are blurry from allergies. I saw my own thread here and insisted to myself, "I did NOT start a thread called pubic pics!" :read::eek::faint:

When I've looked through some of the profiles here I don't see too many pics of members.

For those who have them on here or other boards, what prompted you to post?

For those who don't have them on here or other boards, what prevents you?

some pics of me back on CF .. plenty on FB .. here ,just haven't been bothered to
its a bit of "whatever i look like today i will look like tomorrow ",with added grey and increasing wrinkles ..

have noticed that when someone adds a person on F/B ..first thing most people do is .. yup -browse their pics . odd really ,since they seldom do after that and for the most part forget most of what they saw haha .
though people who go 'hunting " other peoples pics externally -but beginning from a text type forum like this ... i'm a little troubled wondering what motivates that- its a bit creepy :spider:

I am a noted creepy person. :happy-run2:

And I wasn't hunting for pics. I just found them by mistake, looking at something else.

It was a very nice find. Ahh...sigh. So gorgeous.

Anywhoo - the person wants their pics to be seen, that is why they are public and online. She also has plenty of followers. I just happened to make a connection to someone from another forum. As I'm pretty sure she wouldn't be comfortable with that, no info or hints are going to be provided by me as to who that person might be.

She also hasn't blocked me. :)

I have pics of all of you hanging on the wall above my bed next to the maps with where you live. Hope nobody minds.

Lol I did that when I was 14 and had a crush on a guy from school. There was a list with adresses and somehow I found out which one he was. He hadn't even said his name. Lol then he asked my name and I said: and you are Peter Smit and you live on the Ridderstraat 4 I think it was telephone number zip code. Wahahahaha he didn't even care.

Last year I went on a date with a guy who was almost blind, but he was so naive to use his own name on a dating site, so I figured out who he was immediately. He was on Facebook, Twitter, everything. It was just one google click, not that hard to find out. But he saw almost nothing, so he had no idea he had pics from his ex wife he just split from a few months back and whole fights between them on Facebook and he had been on a weird site where girls said he was hot and they put that pic on his Facebook, his face surrounded by girls saying he was hot, he had no idea and he was a lawyer or something, it had to be a bit professional when people looked him up. I just told him. He was happy that I told him and let another guy remove it all. I only told him after he befriended me on Facebook, not that it was the first thing I did.

I used my name on a dating site once. One of my internet names, that is. Could be this one. Maybe, maybe not. Anywhoo - I did it primarily to look at another's profile from another site. Then I realized - holy crap - way too much accurate information there! So I transformed myself into a midget from somewhere else.

I saw one guy on a veteran forum. He said a woman called him to warn him. Nigerian love scammers had stolen his pics from Facebook and pretended to be him on a dating site, talking to all these women and with a sad story getting money from them. He was flattered that they used his pics and hoped that the other women were just as smart as her. I encountered a few on christian cafe, that was full of love scammers. I looked the pics up with google reverse search and got a lot of hits where they used that guy's pic on dating sites, love scammer alert.

tineye is a good tool for reverse image searches. I made a pic of Gizmo with a hood - but I borrowed the hood. Tineye picked it up. It's a fairly accurate tool.
