Except the issue here seems more of failing to father a child to honour his dead brother, than spilling his seed on the ground in isolation.

I do not think failing to produce a child is a sin. Onan's sin appears to be deliberately intervening to prevent the possibility of a child being conceived. The motive appears to have been avarice which is a sin too.

Who here approves of it? Who here does not and why?

I approve. I used the pill until God said we'd get a child. Then after 2 kids we thought it was okay and I made an appointment to get sterilized, lol but one week before the appointment God said: Are you ready for a third?

I don't feel like reading all the replies. :p

I was on birth control for a while when we got married and even for a while I was in the hospital and it wasn't to do whatever.
It was to control my heavy cycles. (sorry guys) :ziplip:

It also helps to get the body back into a cycle system again when experiencing anovulation (go on for a length of time and then off to start ovulating again).

Taking a drug to treat an illness or a debilitating condition is not a sin even if the drug has a side effect of stopping pregnancy but if the drug causes early term abortion then its use may be sinful though I think further information and further morals guidance would help to decide about its use.

Abortion is wrong for sure, I dont see it as a choice and I doubt God does either. I think all those babies are crying out in heaven against all this

Yes, that wasn't the best way of wording what I was trying to say. The sin was, as you say, intervening to prevent the child rather than merely failing despite his best efforts. Had he not pulled out but failed to father a child it's hard to see how that could be considered sinful.

Where abortion is concerned I think it's worth differentiating between an abortion of convenience and an abortion that is intended to save the mother's life.

There's a huge difference between sexual immorality paired with an attitude that abortion is just another line of contraception, and terminating a much-wanted pregnancy because the alternative is almost certain death for the mother.

Again is that the answer to trust man rather than God? To let Him decide if anyone will die

In the case of taking the pill for anovulation...that means the woman isn't ovulating. That means she can't get pregnant.

"just another line of contraception" is part of the problem. It is because artificial contraception is seen as okay, even good according to many, that abortion gets its foot in the door (so to speak) as "just another" way to prevent unwanted children from being born into the world.

Yes, abortion is a birth control method the RC Denomination opposes (and I rejoice in that). But generally the RC Denomination is - by far - the worlds largest, foremost, boldest religious advocate, promoter and teacher of birth control. It's just that it DOES oppose the specific method of abortion (to its credit).

Here is an article that I found that I think may be helpful.

Modern birth control methods were unknown in Bible times, and the Bible is, therefore, silent on the matter. The Bible does have quite a lot to say about children, however. The Bible presents children as a gift from God (Genesis 4:1; Genesis 33:5), a heritage from the Lord (Psalm 127:3-5), a blessing from God (Luke 1:42), and a crown to the aged (Proverbs 17:6). God sometimes blesses barren women with children (Psalm 113:9; Genesis 21:1-3; 25:21-22; 30:1-2; 1 Samuel 1:6-8; Luke 1:7, 24-25). God forms children in the womb (Psalm 139:13-16). God knows children before their birth (Jeremiah 1:5; Galatians 1:15).

The closest that Scripture comes to condemning birth control is Genesis chapter 38, the account of Judah's sons Er and Onan. Er married a woman named Tamar, but he was wicked and the Lord put him to death, leaving Tamar with no husband or children. Tamar was given in marriage to Er's brother, Onan, in accordance with the law of levirate marriage in Deuteronomy 25:5-6. Onan did not want to split his inheritance with any child that he might produce on his brother's behalf, so he practiced the oldest form of birth control, withdrawal. Genesis 38:10 says, “What he did was wicked in the LORD's sight; so He put him to death also.” Onan's motivation was selfish; he used Tamar for his own pleasure, but refused to perform his legal duty of creating an heir for his deceased brother. This passage is often used as evidence that God does not approve of birth control. However, it was not the act of contraception that caused the Lord to put Onan to death; it was Onan’s selfish motives behind the action. Therefore, we can find no biblical admonition against the use of birth control in and of itself.

Contraception, by definition, is merely the opposite of conception. It is not the use of contraception that is wrong or right. As we learned from Onan, it is the motivation behind the contraception that determines if it is right or wrong. Married couples use contraception for a variety of reasons. Some feel called to put off childbearing until they are in a better position to care for children. Some, such as missionary couples, may feel their service to God overrides the desire for children at a particular point in time. Some may be convinced that God has a different plan for them. Ultimately, a couple’s motives for delaying childbearing, using contraception, or even having numerous children, are between them and God.

The inability to have children when they are desired is always presented in Scripture as a bad thing, especially considering the cultural stigma attached to childlessness at that time. There is no one in the Bible who expressed a desire not to have any children. At the same time, it cannot be argued from the Bible that it is wrong to use birth control for a limited time, or even permanently, for that matter. All married couples should seek the Lord’s will in regards to when they should try to have children and how many children they seek to have.

It all comes down to this: no one has the right to determine whether someone else should or should not use birth control, how many children is the “right” number for them, or whether they should have children at all. As in all things, we are not to judge others or cause brothers and sisters in Christ to stumble, spiritually speaking.

Note - the principles outlined in this article apply equally, generally speaking, to the various methods of birth control, including using a condom / condoms, diaphragm / diaphragms, spermicide / spermicides, contraceptives, intrauterine devices, IUD, or coitus interruptus.
